sony RX100 IV or sony RX10 II?
 

I am about to retire my sony nex5, It seems like am going smaller and smaller these days, going from Nikon D300 w/grip>D90>Sony NEX 5N. I am done lugging around a bag with camera and 2-3 lens.

I like the RX100 for the smaller weight, size, flip up selfie screen and 1.8 aperture on the wide end. I like the RX100 for the extended range and rich video features. I am more of a stills guy but I would like to get more videos. I have a gopro 3+ black to complement.

How's the glass on both? I know they are both sony/zeiss collaborations but is one significantly superior than the other?

if you don't need the teleobjective of the rx10 2 then I would go with the rx100 4 anyday. It's not only smaller but also offers the EVF that is a huge benefit to me. I played with it and had the feeling it was just as fast as my A6000.

look at your photos... see how many shots are taken above ~70mm

(rx100 IV is 24-70. Clear Image Zoom "digital zoom" extends that to 140mm, but you have to disable RAW)


a lot of people get the RX100 IV to compliment a larger camera (Dslr/mirrorless/...). you probably should keep your nex5 as a backup when you want a longer lens camera

RX100 Mk3 is usually cheaper than Mk4 (sometimes by a fair margin) and pretty much identical except it is missing 4K recording. If 4K is not a high priority item, I would get Mk3 over Mk4.

RX100 Mk2 is a marginal update over Mk1 and really a step down from Mk3 in many ways.

If you are looking for something small, then clearly RX10 is outside of the scope...

important for video: rx10 has better grip, stabilized lens, and also built in ND filter
