Flying on a codeshare - two pet fees?
 

Later this summer, I'll be flying BGR - LGA - DEN with a flight on US Airways (some regional airline actually operating the flight for US Airways) from BGR to JFK, and then a United operated flight from LGA - DEN.

When making my pet reservation, I was told by US Airways that I would have to pay both the US Airways fee and the United fee...

I'm just curious if others had that same experience. I know I'll have to pay the US Airways fee when I check in, but when would I pay the United fee? At the gate? What happens if I just board the plane?

A few years ago I flew Continental and NW from Houston to State College, PA and only had to pay one fee, but that was also before the fees started going up and up and up. At that time I had asked if the one fee covered both airlines and they had said yes...

Question...are you checking the pet or are you carrying the pet onboard with you?

Sorry to not make that clear... We will be carrying our dog on the plane with us.

I would imagine that unless you were on a codeshare flight you would be obligated to pay two fees. If it was a codeshare one would have a legitimate argument for only one fee.

So slightly OT, does anyone have experience regarding codeshares for the various alliances and what happens with carryon pet fees?

Not really OT since we are on a US Airways ticket with US Airways flight numbers on both flights - here is my itinerary:
Flight 1 - US 3867 BGR to LGA (operated by Air Wisconsin doing business as US Airways express) (Departs 1:55 PM, arrives 3:20 PM)
Flight 2 - US 6215 LGA to DEN (operated by United Airlines) (Departs 5:30 PM, Arrives 8:24 PM)

Update for those interested...

I flew yesterday from BGR to LGA (US Flight 3867) and then LGA to DEN (US Codeshare 6215, operated by United - UA 409). We were charged a pet fee upon check in in BGR ($100) and then in LGA we had to change terminals, we were also charged a pet fee by United when we picked up our boarding passes ($125, I believe). When I tried to explain that we had already paid the pet fee, United said that it didn't matter since we had two carriers...

Note to self - if flying with Pet make sure no codeshare flights.

IMHO you have absolutely nothing to lose writing to US and demanding a credit for the second fee. You would have a valid argument as it was a US ticket for both flights. @:-)
