I'm curious...just where do you take a dog outside at ORD to do their business? It's concrete and crowds as far as I can see.
Also, the funniest experience I ever had with a pet on a plane was when a cat escaped from her carrier and ran up and down the plane under the seats. The owner was unaware that this had happened, until the FA made the announcement that a cat was loose in the galley. |

So now, having just found this thread, I'm curious - how did the pooch travel end up?

Replying to the OP, when traveling with my little girl I always take her out of her bag and sit her on my lap while waiting to board. Upon landing I won't take her out until we are outside the terminal in a place where she can do her business.
I have even seen dogs being held by their owners in DL's CRC's, but always in a quiet section so as not to disturb fellow travelers. |

I'm a dog lover, but...
It annoys me to no end when I see travelers who have the dog on the leash walking through the crowded terminal, or sitting in the middle of the crowded boarding area playing with their dog and/or cat. IMHO, airports are crowded, unfamiliar places, and animals may behave unpredictably in new environments. There are a lot of people who aren't animal lovers, or have allergies, so I think that passengers who are flying with their pet should make every effort to be inconspicuous and avoid bringing their pet into contact with other passengers. You love your dog, but your dog may not be loved by everyone who is nearby. I hope I don't sound like a animal hater--I'm the furthest thing from that!--but I've just seen too many inconsiderate people traveling with pets. (And, for the record, I practice what I preach when I travel with my pets. In fact, the ideal trip is one where almost no one--except for security screeners, ticket agents and a few observant individuals--even realize I'm traveling with an animal.) Sorry for the rant, but I just don't understand when this became appropriate. Leave your dogs at home or kenneled during travel. Not everyone is as thrilled to see them in an airport, train station, shop, or restaurant. Not to mention the number of times I've nearly been tripped by their leashes. |

I share this view. It really bugs me to see folks who let their "carry-on" dogs out of their kennels in an airport or during a flight. And I'm really sick of watching women (sorry - I have yet to see a man do this) bring their little dogs through Grand Central Terminal or into Bloomingdale's (my two most recent sightings). When did this become acceptable? Why do I (and my wife and children, who all suffer from asthma) have to cope with shopping with folks toting their little dogs around?

First of all there is a major difference between a dog being out of their bag while in the terminal as opposed to during the flight.

Yes, the store makes the policy, but I see more and more liberal interpretations by owners. I just don't see the need to bring pets into large department stores for extended shopping expeditions.

I've even seen a cat in the gate area being walked on a leash! Cat didn't seem at all freaked by what was going on around him; just happily exploring as much as his human would let him.

I thought it is prohibited to remove a pet from a kennel during flight. Does this depend on the airline?
The only dogs that are permitted out of a bag or kennel and in the cabin during a flight are service anamals (seeing eye dogs). |
