Options for taking dogs to Oz

We’re moving to Australia in January/February and due to Covid (and Qantas stopping pet transport for now) the other airlines have completely price gouged the cost of cargo transport.

the quotes we have been been given to get our 2 dogs (plus business class for 2 of us) from the USA to Melbourne are downright ridiculous and I have been wondering if there are other options available? I know it’s an international journey but are there charter shares or empty leg journeys that we could look into? I’m thinking the cost would be comparable (and an easier journey for our dogs) than what we’re seeing just now.

I assume you already have checked the usual suspects.
Try Fiji Airways, maybe they still have sensible rates for pets as cargo: https://www.fijiairways.com/en-us/ab...o-and-freight/. Business class on their new A350 is pretty nice, and breaking the journey in NAN is not a bad thing with dogs in the hold.

AA cargo offers a 50% military discount so if you know anyone in the military you could save a bunch of money (more info). AA only flies to SYD, though.

Flying private across the Pacific will definitely cost you a whole lot more money than even overpriced tickets on scheduled service. You're looking at about $10k per hour for a jet that has the range for this route divided by 12 or so seats.. I`d say expect to pay $15k at the very least.
Also the AUS government has a bunch of BS rules pertaining to animals on board of private jets, too. I mean, restraining them so they can't move from a mat for 16 hours? (click for CASA animal rules). Both broker and charter operator need to be familiar with animal import rules.

My brother relocated to Australia in 2018 with his wife, Claudia, and dog Geronimo. They used a service where they gave Geronimo to them in LA, and got him back in Australia after he cleared Quarantine. They handled all the custom paperwork and you as the owner would have to get him cleared to fly by giving your pet a certified physical within 7 days of flying. They also sent pictures everyday of his status while in transit and quarantine. I will see if I can get the name of the company and post it here.

The name of the company is Jet Pets and here is their website. Process took about 6 months.

6 months? Wow, that’s got to cost quite a lot of money.

Qantas are not expecting to fly AU<----->USA until mid 2021
UA are flying SFO-SYD and DL are flying LAX-SYD

No the flight/quarantine was only one week, the process to get the paperwork/initial physical done took them 6 months. Since they were moving from Florida, it probably took longer than if the OP is located closer to LA where they are based.

Yeah, that’s the kind of service we are currently using.

My original question was actually to see if there were other options, ie flight shares, empty legs etc.

The normal cost of getting pets to Australia (via air cargo) has gone through the roof due to covid. The rate we’ve been quoted is extortionate and it may be cheaper trying something different.

The pet shipping service only take care of the paperwork etc, they don’t set the flight cost unfortunately! The guy we are working with is great but this is something he can’t control. Hence my question for alternatives

If you want to try flying private, JetCorp is probably the biggest player for Australia - check for seats with them.
All the usual tricks (going via New Zealand, transporting the animals as checked baggage to a transfer point in Asia/Europe and only send them as cargo on the last leg etc.) to avoid the high prices for cargo don't work due to covid travel restrictions.
