Checking an empty dog crate as baggage
 

I have a puppy that for now is small enough to take with me in the cabin in one of those soft under-the-seat carriers. I'm wondering if I can take an actual crate with me - maybe something like the one linked below - as checked baggage? (to use once at my destination)

the smallest is roughly 28 x 21 x 21, so 70 inches.

I think that exceeds mosts carriers standards.
Just look on the website of your ticketed airline.
You can probably pay extra and send it.

Yes you can check an empty crate (baggage fees may apply) but please mark it very clearly in very large print as EMPTY.

I've seen passengers go half crazy when they thought an animal was being loaded with other baggage and freight.

OP, if you are looking to take a crate so that you can use it while at your destination, why not look at the nylon packable crates?

These crates come apart so that the top part can be inverted and fitted into the bottom part, then the metal screens can be set inside the plastic top and bottom. If I were checking an empty crate as baggage, I would disassemble the crate and put it in a box and check the box as luggage. An empty crate will just get thrown around by the baggage handles and could get damaged. At least the box will offer some protection if it gets thrown around (and it probaby will because itis lightweight).
