At least 50 European airlines at financial risk

http://www.fly.co.uk/news/at-least-5...sk-198293.html

The report by Blue Oar securities singled out several airlines as being in the greatest danger of collapse due to current economic conditions, including Italy’s Alitalia, SAS of Scandinavia, the Greek carrier Olympic, Malev of Hungary and Poland’s Lot.
Cannot seem to find the other 45 listed!

The report in the Times that is mentioned was actually published at the beginning of August and has been discussed elsewhere before, such as the bmi board:

This is news?

News would be: "<Airline> not at risk".

There are probably about 20 in the UK alone! There are nearly 50 countries in Europe (depending on how you count it) and probably the majority of those have at least some sort of national airline.

Southwest is not at risk. So I guess that is newsworthy.

I guess once you start counting all the independent city states, the numbers are up there... Some of these are technically territories of the bigger countries though.

Good to know.

The big question....

What are going to be the knock on effect of XL going down - which other companies are going to be affesced as a result - and, if any are in the danger of going bankrupt, should the consumer not have the right to know.....

We've had competition in the airline sector EU wide for over 15 years so it is there are not just flag carriers. The Uk alone has 3 long haul scheduled airlines (VS, BA, BD). Plus there have been big charter outfits for 30+ years (Monarch, Britannie, Hapag Lloyd)
