A couple of years ago they actually had an engine "depart" the wing over Lake Michigan.

How the US FAA lets them continue to operate is beyond me.
Badly loaded, misfigured c/g, or a too steep an angle of attack breaking ground resulting in an awesome thumping down on the tail skid plate?

And it also belongs to Kalitta Air...Two jumbos in a month or so? That is enough to put an airline out of business!

CNN is reporting that they radioed in an engine fire prior to the crash. Sad day indeed for Kalitta, the locals who died and the injured crew.

One engine on fire doesn't usually cause a crash. it will be interesting to see what else went wrong.

Easy for the plane to split open like that.

During takeoff pilot notices problem such as engine fire.
Plane leaves ground.
Pilot aborts takeoff.
Plane comes back down on its landing gear, hard.
Plane splits open in the middle like a cracked egg.

Any relationship to USA Jet Airlines, also operating out of Willow Run?

According to the CNN article they are both based in Ypsilanti, but beyond that no correlation. I have no idea if Kalitta brings the planes back to Ypsilanti for maintenance or just has it handled at an outstation. I cannot imagine that there is sufficient volume to keep 747 maintenance crews fully employed in Ypsilanti, but who knows.

Ypsilanti, Ypsilanti, Ypsilanti, Ypsilanti. Sorry, but the word is funny to me.
