China Airlines 737 burns at Okanawa Airport

CNN just showed an amazing video of a China Airlines 737 burning. All 155 passengers and crew escaped and there were no injuries. I believe the plane was at or near the gate after boarding, the video shows a small fire at first but it eventually consumes much of the plane.

Sorry for spelling error. It should, of course, be Okinawa.

Update: The plane had just arrived after a flight from Taipei. It seems to be in the gate area.

I am at Narita in the Sakura lounge and it is on all the channels. I don@t speak Japanese, so can`t tell what they're saying about the cause or even if the cause is known yet. Nothing yet on the English language websites that I can see.

Can't find video link yet, just articles. This isn't good for China Airlines which already has a pretty bad reputation for safety.

CNN now says there were at least 4 injuries and there may still be people on the plane. Since the interior of the plane seems to be totally burned, that isn't good news.

Wow, from that photo, the smoke looks like it's coming from the cabin.

Just saw Bobster's post - so I guess it is coming from the cabin.

To be fair, CI hasn't had a serious safety incident in five years or so, until this one. Up until now, things had changed. It will be interesting to see what caused this.

Latest from Bloomberg

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?p...0io&refer=home

The left engine of the Boeing Co. 737 caught fire, according to NHK, a Japanese state-owned television network. Four crew members may not have escaped, NHK said.
I hope that is just being misreported. Terrible news...

Have any updates come through to confirm everyone is OK?
This report noted the fire started a few minutes after landing.

Having read your report above, it is very, very sad.

CNN is reporting a Reuters story that two crew were taken to the hospital and two are still missing. Apparently the fire started three minutes after landing.

I'm in Japan these days, but far from the site so I only know what Japanese news media reports, and according to them, everybody got out alive.

Phew!

A spokesperson for China Airlines said there were no casualties among the 155 passengers and 8 crew.
