Boeing may delay 787 maiden flight

From the article:

PARIS : The maiden flight of the new Boeing 787 Dreamliner could be delayed by several weeks, although its launch is still planned for mid-2008, the head of Boeing Commercial Airplanes said on Sunday.

"The first flight is targeted for end-August but it will happen when the plane is ready. Frankly my guess is, it is going to happen mid-September," said Scott Carson on the eve of the Paris Air Show.

"In two weeks, we'll be revealing the 787 to the world," he said, referring to the first factory roll-out on July 8, adding: "We believe we are on track to deliver the first plane in May 08."

Since the planes parts do not fit together (.30 inches off) I would imagine they have a BIG problem on their hand although they will not admit it

Speculations from a couple of month ago resulted in a delay of up to 12 months...

Question is, how Boeing will publish the news, peu a peu a la Airbus ( with several stock price beatings ) or at once ( with one major major drop )

In any case, if the rumours hold true and there is little doubt within the industry that Boeing faces a huge problem, one should think about selling Boeing stock asap...

0.30 inch gap? Just needs a little bit of that NASCAR duct tape.

I thought I read that .3 inches is not a big deal and if they were making the plane from metal being off by .3 inches would be great!!

And according to Boeing that issue has already been fixed.

The story goes in to say how the wings fit better than any previous Boeing airplane.

I guess this would be good news unless you were trying to cause a drop in Boeing's stock price.

Wouldn't that "melting" rubber hobby cement be a better fit?

Just Dremel(tm) out the imperfections when you're done.

Looks like first flight won't happen until late September now, which is at the end of the 4 week target window Boeing set.

Just noticed this in the first article quoted:

Among the potential 787 clients, Boeing is holding "preliminary discussions" with US carriers Delta and American Airlines, Carson said.

Will be nice if that comes about.

Looks like the delay is going to stretch into October now. Getting the systems that work (individually) in the lab to actually work together in the place is proving to be difficult.

Look to be delayed further: USA Today - Boeing pushes back first 787 test flight
By Marilyn Adams, USA TODAY
Aerospace giant Boeing (BA) has delayed flight testing its flagship 787 Dreamliner until late this year, raising questions about whether it can deliver the first of its hot-selling jetliners on schedule.

Company officials said in a conference call Wednesday that unforeseen production delays mean the aircraft's first flight can't take place until mid-November to mid-December. The first flight had been planned for this month, although no date had been set.

That will leave only five to six months to conduct required flight-safety tests before the scheduled May delivery of the first 787 to Japanese carrier ANA. In contrast, Boeing's last new airplane, the wide-body 777, spent 11 months in flight tests in the 1990s. ...

The delayed mid-2008 test flight is now getting the Boeing PR spin.
An update for our frequent flyer Dreamliner fanboys and gals:
Boeing working to make Dreamliner test flight a reality [SMH/Reuters]
Boeing mechanics and engineers are working round the clock to make sure the new 787 Dreamliner, already two years behind schedule, makes its first test flight before the end of June.

The revolutionary, carbon composite aircraft -- assembled near Seattle from parts made around the world -- was supposed to fly in the summer of 2007, but has been pushed back four times by production snafus and delayed by a two-month mechanics' strike.

Boeing has reshuffled its schedule a number of times, but now looks to be on track to finally get the first 787 into the air sometime in the second quarter, as promised in December. If the tests go to plan, it will start delivering planes to airlines in the first quarter of 2010.
