SLC Tests Hand-Reading Device
 

Salt Lake City International Airport is testing an identification device that measures handprints to allow only authorized people into restricted areas.

Monday, Airport Executive Director Tim Campbell said that if the tests prove successful, the airport w ill need as many as 200 such biometric devices, which take more than 90 measurements of a hand's length, width, thickness and surface. A hand typically takes less than one second to verify.

The $1,500 device, donated by the industrial equipment manufacturer Inger- soll-Rand Co., is being tested at the airport's Operations Center. Company spokesman Glenn Guthrie said at a news conference at the airport that the New Jersey-based firm will donate similar "hand readers" to any airport asking for one.
