"Get rid of First Class!"
This guy sound like loads of fun at a party...
Get rid of first class! Putting an end to preferential treatment for the jet set will help thwart hijackers and save the environment. - - - - - - - - - - - - By Dennis Riches Oct. 16, 2001 | There is one simple measure that could do much to thwart future hijacking attempts: eliminate class distinctions in airline travel. Abolish first class. It is clear that not only in the recent hijackings, but in almost all attacks on the cockpits of aircraft, terrorists have taken great advantage of the extra space, low occupancy and privacy of the first-class area. The attacks of Sept. 11 made it well-known that hijackers prefer flying first class, and this in itself might do much to make even the most hardened, comfort-craving snobs want to sit at the back of the plane with the commoners. The hijackers bought first-class tickets because they knew airline staff would be unlikely to treat first-class passengers with suspicion, and they would be able to move freely and have few people to control. They may even have murdered members of the crew and taken over the cockpit before anyone behind the curtains in coach class knew what was happening. If regular coach passengers were seated as far forward as possible it would create a crowded area near the cockpit that hijackers could not easily gain control of. But such a modus operandi is probably the airlines' worst nightmare, given what we know about how heavily they rely on their business- and first-class customers to make a profit. First-class travel is objectionable for many reasons, not just security implications. I fly frequently, and before Sept. 11 I often wondered why we still tolerate a few people having the extra leg room, champagne and massages of premium air travel. Why, in our supposedly enlightened era, do we still see the youngest and most attractive flight attendants catering to an elite class of mostly older, male clients? Even if this is not quite the reality, it is certainly the imagery thrust at us by industry advertising for business- and first-class seating. http://www.salon.com/tech/feature/20....../index.html |

Getting rid of aircraft could help also, no? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif |
Yeah, right, if the Communists had prevailed we wouldn't be having the problems we have today, sure.

More CRJs, fewer meals, cheap wine ... seems they already are getting rid of first.

this guy needs to work harder to justify his name. then he could fly first class. [riches] personally, i like fc , even w/ reduced service.

Actually, I think this fellow is onto something. If airlines ran their coach like Midwest Express does (wide leather seats, first-class quality meals, etc.) then there wouldn't be a need for first class!
|
Give up first!?!? No way, we need that extra leg room to kick and fight back! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
Here is a question to ponder. JAL and other airlines still have (had?) smoking. Have all airlines done away with this? With lighters and alcohol onboard, it could be very easy otherwise to make onboard molotov cocktails. Shaken AND stirred. ------------------ "Fly me to the moon and let me earn alot of miles." |
Perhaps Mr. Riches has never flown to Europe on a $500 super-discount ticket made possible by rich people and corporations buying $5000 first class tickets, and would prefer to pay $1500 for his next trip rather than be subsidized by the working and idle rich.

His base premise is wrong -- the terrorists sat throughout the plane from news reports. They were probably in first to be closer to the cockpit, not because it was luxurious..
|
The problem is with his underlying so-called progressive premise: that in this "enlightened age" it is not acceptable not to have equality of results instead of equality of opportunity. The problem with the former is that equality of results is only enforcable under totalitarianism. And by equality, I mean low quality. Using the issue of "security" as a means of pushing an anti-achievement agenda is manipulation people's attitudes in order to enslave them.

The last time I tried to storm the cockpit from my first class seat I fell through the nose of a 747.
I had to realize that the cockpit was on the upper deck. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif |
Why not have First Class at the back of the plane instead? (makes priority boarding a lot easier as first class pax in narrow body aircraft wont' have to watch the economy class pax walk by them)
FYI, some airlines who use 747 aircraft put Economy class seats on the upper deck while First/Business classes are downstairs. |

how about changing all the seats on a plane to first class seats, serve first class food throughout the plane, but everyone pay Y class fares? wouldn't that be better? hehe... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
