Airline Fights DVT Syndrome
Emirates Airlines passengers are being offered a revolutionary device to combat deep vein thrombosis (DVT) on long-haul flights.
The UAE carrier is the first airline to offer the Airogym - an inflatable cushion, which passengers press on with their feet to improve blood flow through the legs. Tests with Airogym show that blood flow improves by 25-50% following its use. DVT is caused by blood clots in the legs due to poor flow, which then attack the heart and can sometimes cause death.
Designers of the pillow, which include a former British Airways pilot, tested Airogym on 40 volunteers and the results have led to backing for its use by respected UK doctors.
