Airline wars hot up

A new player in the domestic airline market opens for business on Monday, while a potential rival seeks Government support to operate in New Zealand.

Freedom Air, a subsidiary of Air New Zealand, began taking bookings at 0700 for its cut-price service which starts on Tuesday, flying between Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

Three airlines join price war

A price war on domestic air routes begins with the first budget flights today and a third airline, Qantas, joining the fray.

Air New Zealand subsidiary Freedom Air took a rush of bookings yesterday for its first no-frills services between Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

But in a surprise late-afternoon announcement, Qantas Airways undercut Freedom, offering seats at $178 return between Auckland and Christchurch this month. Air New Zealand's cheapest Auckland-Christchurch return fare is $289.

Australian discount carrier Virgin Blue, owned by UK's Richard Branson, has told Australia's anti-trust regulator that Qantas Airways Ltd should not be allowed to buy the operations of Impulse Airlines.

Im in the market to purchase return tickets from Sydney to Adelaide and from Sydney to Perth this July BUT I have seen no indication of any price wars on these routes.

Perhaps Virgin Blue should list with sabre??

Summary of Airwise article

Australia's three domestic airlines affirmed that the fare wars would continue. Airwise reports that Qantas, Ansett and Virgin Blue publicly stated their intent to continue to offer discounted fares. They did however say that fares as low as 16 USD / 17 USD / 26 CAD are "unsustainable."
Australia's fare wars contributed to the failure of Impulse Airlines earlier this month.

Sorry for Impulse Airlines but at these prices !!!!

While in CDA we reel and roll with high fares and in the US we have the low fares but not the on time departures !!!

Ah, the airline business. Ain't it a beauty !
