Sprint/MCI_Worldcom Merger Dead?
For all of you frequent phone switchers out there (and you know who you are!) who were worried that the proposed Worldcom/Sprint merger would lessen the FF freebies that phone companies would offer, it appears that the Dept. of Justice is going to oppose the merger. Quite frankly, given their merger guidelines and the market concentration that this merger would create, they have to oppose it. See:

As I had predicted in an earlier thread (can't find it right now, and don't feel like searching), I don't think this deal can pass muster with the feds. So, it looks like they will continue to compete for our phone $$s with FF miles.

The talk in the industry is that Worldcom will divest the Sprint LD business and the internet business sectors and merge the network and pcs divisions. All they wanted was pcs anyway.

From "Good Morning Silicon Valley" newsletter from San Jose Mercury News:
Mega merger death knell: The DOJ will file a suit to block
WorldCom's proposed $120 billion merger with Sprint,
Worldcom said this morning. The EU is also expected to
propose killing the deal. The companies -- Worldcom the
second and Sprint the third largest U.S. long-distance
telephone companies -- have been unsuccessful in their
attempts to convince regulators that the deal would not
harm competition in the long-distance and Internet
markets, Sprint said.

Thanks Djlawman for this update.I have a question. Am I correct in stating Sprint has Alaska Airlines,TWA, and Virgin Airlines are FF partners? Is there any other airlines involved as FF partners? I know Sprint recently lost America West Airlines..as a FF partner..Again thanks for the heads up Djlawman!

Thirty senators are voicing opposition to foreign government-owned companies taking over U.S. telecommunications businesses, amid reports that German carrier Deutsche Telekom is looking at snapping up long-distance giant Sprint Corp.
