The more people fly, the more they prefer the aisle seat

US airlines are filling empty seats in record numbers. In 2013, they filled 83.1% of their passenger capacity according to the US Department of Transportation Statistics. In June, domestic routes were 87.4% full a monthly record. The increased load not only means fewer empty middle seats but also stiffer competition for a window or aisle.

Except in biz or first class (especially when traveling with partner) when window is more than acceptable.

Nope, always prefer a window seat... even in economy.

I wonder if it's related to height. I'm 6'2" and always take an aisle so I can stretch out occasionally (other than a red-eye, where I take a window).

Or age/bladder control....

I always book an aisle seat. There is room to stretsch my legs into the aisle.

I used to be 100% window seat (A preferred) but have started to mix in more aisle selections lately as a change of pace.

For me easier access to overhead storage during flight is the best aisle benefit (especially if you are in an bulkhead row with no under seat storage option in front of you) but I really do not appreciate getting bumped and bruised by my fellow passengers carry-on's during boarding...

Overnight flights would still be window seats though so as not to be disturbed.

Aisle aways. Maybe a window bulkhead if there is enough space to exit without dislocating the neighbor pax ^

I still prefer window, especially on bulkheads or exit row when I can get it. I don't necessarily mind aisle, but since I'm tall, I find the FA carts or people using lavatories usually bump my legs or shoulder. I'd rather be in window seat and ask people to get up so I can rather than the other way around--since there are so many morons out there. There's also less chance of someone spilling something on me when they get up.

On overnight flights, I always prefer window so I'm not disturbed.

On some of the newer planes, you have the best of both worlds in first -- a window and an aisle. Perfect.

The only isle seats I know of are the old solo middle ones in AA 763s FC cabin (2-1-2) though there maybe others...

Would being in an aisle have saved them?

The new AA 763 configuration is 2-2-2 so if you can get inner aisle (G/D) you won't be disturbed or disturb. I always shoot for those if I know I am on the newer ones (I think most of the fleet has been reconfigured this way).
