MH17 Goes Down on 18th Anniversary of TWA Flight 800 Crash
Since 1996 July 17th has been a sad date in aviation history. On that evening TWA Flight 800 exploded and crashed shortly after taking off from JFK. The lives of all 230 people aboard were lost.

9M-MRD's first flight was on July 17, 1997. It was shot down on the 17th Anniversary of that first flight while flying as MH17.
That's a lot of "17"s. |
This is NOT a thread for political argumentation
Plenty of those in OMNI/PR Please keep this thread respectful and on-topic cblaisd Moderator, Travel News |
To express sympathy
The most important thing is of course the sadness of loss of life of innocent people. This could be anyone. And Malaysian Airlines management, still struggling from earlier this year, now has this event to come to terms with. I really hope what happened is clarified soon.

malaysian airlines is very unlucky imo. SQ351 was very near where the MH17 was reported shot down. Guess it could have happened to anyone

Someone in another thread pointed out the very high mathematical probability of a crash occurring on the same date as another widely-known aviation incident. As with the "how many people until it's likely 2 have the same birthday", the probabilities are much higher then many would think. 41% sticks in my head.

Another sad tragedy, remember being at home and hearing the news break on CNN

Again, please stay on topic.....
There are other threads where un-related observations and speculations can be discussed. cblaisd Moderator, Travel News |

Two aircraft accidents' odds would also depend, I would think on the number of flights operating and also the chance of an accident of this nature. It is an odd and sad coincidence. |
