Post Boeing Delivers 8,000th 737

SEATTLE, April 16, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing (BA) today delivered the 8,000th 737 to come off the production line to United Airlines, marking another important milestone for the world's best-selling airplane. The airplane, a Next-Generation 737-900ER (Extended Range), features a special logo.

The 737 is the first commercial airplane in history to reach this delivery milestone. The program has a strong backlog with more than 3,700 airplanes on order, including 1,934 orders for the new 737 MAX.

Maybe for an airline's purposes, but personally as a passenger, I find them to be the most miserable planes to fly, second to only CRJs.

You can say that again! Glad to see such a milestone reached, and I can't wait for the 10,000th 737!

With 8,000 already made and 3,700 on-order, that makes a production run of at least 11,700 737's. It is hard to wrap my mind around such incredible numbers.

Got me thinking about other famous aircraft. Wikipedia lists the total production of the DC-9 and MD-80 family at over 2,400. The A-320 production is north of 4,000.

However, total production of the DC-3 Dakota (all variants) is 16,079!

A colleague of mine loves that plane. Wasn't it written about in the book "Fate is the Hunter? "

I love the 757. Its my 'personal' favorite plane. Unfortunately, its isn't as multi-purposed as the 737. Too many seats for smaller routes. The 757 fits a beautiful niche in-between the 737 and the widebodies, but its a limited market.

But from a airline business model, the 737 family covers 80% of what the 757 does, plus everything smaller town to RJs. And its almost as fun to fly as the 757.

I remember when UA started flying the 737 way back in 1968. They replaced DC-6 and Viscount routes. They actually had a special sign on the gate flight destination board The New 737 Jet. It was strange seeing a jet with only 2 engines on the wings vs DC8, 720, and 707 with 4.

And Boeing almost sold the design to Mitsubishi because no one would buy it at first.
