Favor In-Flight Phone Access? Depends On How Old You Are

According to a survey, travelers over the age of 30 are largely (79%) opposed to the possibility of in-flight cell phone usage while about half (52%) of travelers between the ages of 18 and 29 favor the new perk.

How old are you and where do you stand?

I'm 27 and I oppose the possibility of in-flight phone calls. I wouldn't mind texting.

37, I do not favor in flight calls....I am only in favor of texting in SILENT mode.

Case and point.. I am in the U.S. CLUB @MCO listening to some loud mouth wander around the club screaming into his phone about everything from sales to why he did not get TSA PreChk... I do not want to have to endure these jerks in the air....

25 and completely against it. As it is the only car on Amtrak I'll sit in is the "Quiet Car" to avoid those talking on the phone on the train.

Texting I'd be okay with though you can already do this with an iPhone via iMessage if you're connected to the internet (assuming you're texting someone else via iMessage)

Haven't there been phones on planes for years?

What about these? http://cache.gawkerassets.com/assets...0x_airfone.jpg

I realize they were incredibly expensive, but if you made cell phone calls equally expensive, people would probably use then infrequently and then only for a few minutes.

33 (almost 34), and I'm open to it. Not saying I would be "for" it, but I'd be interested in some possibilities of opening it up.

I'm also not sure I like the idea of making it prohibitively expensive.

I definitely favor allowing texting (on silent).

I'm 25 and opposed to voice usage. I could get on board with texting though.

No class

Absolutely opposed to it. I am sick and tired of hearing other people's conversations. People who talk on a cell phone close to others have no class.

34 and absolutely opposed to it.

Last thing I wanna hear in flight is some "businessman" talking about meetings and stuff

I'm 46 and see nothing wrong with cell phone usage on board. I'm more bothered by the inconsistency of banning cell phone usage yet doing nothing about loud, boisterous passengers shouting to each other on the plane. It's just as irritating yet apparently totally acceptable. If you require people to speak in a soft voice, then it won't matter if they're talking into a cell phone or talking to their neighbor.

Ah, Airfone. Many years ago, in the waning days of Airfone, they had some sort of offer that if you made a 30 minute (?) call you could keep talking for free. I had the misfortune of sitting up front in a UA transcon next to some guy who spent most of the flight bemoaning his fate to someone about his recently failed romance or divorce. That was not fun.

You should free to use your phone for whatever you like, as long as you and it are both silent while doing so. I'm 34. H3LL NO to a plane full of phone conversations and calls.

MUCH rather have them talk on the phone than to me

maradori Jan 6, 2014 9:39 pm

28 and I am totally against it. No calls, no texts. It's miserable enough in Eewnited Y- as is already.

TIGA31328 Jan 6, 2014 9:51 pm

I hate open ended surveys like this. I would like to know, of those under 30, how much travel by air do they actually do. It would also be good to know for all respondents.

I'm 21. I don't like talking on the phone on the ground. BUT it would be nice for business. Not saying everyone SHOULD use their phone, but it would be a nice option.
