If this is approved, I really hope the airlines exercise caution before allowing voice calls. I think a good compromise would be to allow text messaging only.

I don't like the idea of it either, but if I was in the "let me make phone calls" brigade, but what is the difference to me yapping away loudly to the person next to me - besides only hearing half the conversation? (or using the air-phone when they used to have those?)

I feel this one just has to come down to etiquette and "not being an arse". We already has threads about people being excessively loud on the plane, objectively I have to say this doesn't seem like it should be any different.

I find it amazing the psychological vitriol that this subject produces here on Flyertalk. I guess it is related to how airplane crashes capture the public's attention a million times more than other tragedies that have higher numbers of fatalities.
