Autopilot Flew UPS Airbus A300 Into Terrain at BHM: NTSB Official

According to a senior NTSB official, the United Parcel Service Airbus A300 that crashed short of the runway in Birmingham, AL on Wednesday (14) was on autopilot right up to the end (of the black-box instrumentation recording).

Other pilots and aviation experts questioned whether autopilot approaches were appropriate for "tricky" Runway 18 at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth Airport. According to Flying magazine, a longer runway having a precision ILS approach was closed for construction.
