I looked up some more information on the incident at the Hilton in Orlando.
The guy was a sheriff's deputy. His wife, who took the call, panicked and he did what she said.
Quote from the deputy: "When I broke the window, I got suspicious."
They broke the bathroom mirror because they were told there were gas masks behind it.
They broke the wall because were told an unconscious man was next door.
They threw a mattress out the window so they could jump on it. It's not clear if they jumped. One article said no and one said yes.

In theory at least, hotel guests who do this can be sued for damages in civil court. So don't do it.
