Huh? I thought all luggage was screened these days: carry-on and checked luggage alike.

Since they are busy looking in carry ons for things like toothpaste and shampoo, I don't have much sympathy.

I don't get it.

At most airports since the airlines started putting in fees, they have not added security screening lanes, it's the same machine, the same person watching it, etc. They may be looking at more bags when before they were twiddling their thumbs because nothing was coming through the machine, but don't see how that's costing them more money.

If they opened more lanes that would be a different story....

The guys who screen checked luggage are the ones twiddling their thumbs.

I have a bone to pick with this thread title and the title of the linked original article. I mantain it is impossible to "cost TSA any money". TSA has no money of it's own. It is allowed by Congress to spend allocated funds which are the Taxpayer's Money. The correct title is "TSA claims carrry-on bags waste tax dollars."

The extra money comes from extra work. Since it takes way longer to screen all of the passengers with all of the baggage, they need more lines, more machines, and more people. TSA has been lobbying Congress to get a "fee" increase (that us passengers pay). This is just PR to help bring awareness.

I wonder how much more money the airlines make by carrying commercial cargo, in the holds, instead of passengers bags?
