Nuclear power plant's reactor exploded on April 26, 1986, spewing radiation over Europe

KIEV, Ukraine Want a better understanding of the world's worst nuclear disaster? Come tour the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.

Beginning next year, Ukraine plans to open up the sealed zone around the Chernobyl reactor to visitors who wish to learn more about the tragedy that occurred nearly a quarter of a century ago, the Emergency Situations Ministry said Monday.

Leave it to FlyerTalk to prove that this is not a completely new idea...

Why go all the way to Chernobyl when you get a perfectly good dose of harmful radiation at your local airport TSA checkpoint?

Chernobyl Is Already Open To Tourists...

This story is misleading. Chernobyl's "exclusion zone" has been open to tourists for many years. The tours are safe and they are not "illegal." An application to visit, including passport photocopies, must be submitted ahead of time, but this is relatively straightforward. There are radiation checks during and after the visit. Exposure levels during a typical visit are very low.

I took these photos there in 2006:

Already knew it was possible to travel to Chernobyl as part of a tour, but this makes it even easier than before. I'll probably be booking a trip to Kiev to go (and of course write a trip report in the forums :-))

I went in June 2009. It was certainly one of those "wow, this place does exist" experiences. I used this tour company and highly recommend them if anyone is interested in going.

Apparently it's pretty safe. It's no different then crawling into your microwave and pushing the popcorn button.
