Octahedral Airship Would Fly 100 From London To NY In 37 Hours

Story

Towering, kite-shaped airships could herald a new era of luxury transport following today's introduction of the Aircruise concept.

Standing 98ft taller than Canary Wharf, packing 330,000 cubic metres of hydrogen gas and capable of lifting 396 tonnes, the Aircruise concept features penthouse apartments, bars and even dizzying glass viewing floors.

I think people know a bit more about the dangers of hydrogen and how to handle it safely than they did 80 years ago.

That said, I'd take it only if it has Wi-Fi on board. I can do 7 hours in the air without it, even 14 from the States to Down Under, but 37 would test my patience!

Wow, can't believe people are serious about this. I thought it was a headline from the Onion (although, the daily mail's headlines are usually as crazy as the Onion's).

Surely there's a typo here and this thing would be filled with helium, not hydrogen.

Would Helium not work?

Think of the comedy potential if there were any helium leaks!

And a form of comedy was apparently at the heart of this entire episode....

No, this ill conceived idea preferred hydrogen because helium is much rarer, and it was also part of the power source.

Where Has All the Helium Gone?

Hydrogen is also lighter than helium, so you don't need as much of it to lift a given payload.

Indeed, hydrogen would be great for this. I think the idea of putting a bunch of the idle rich, who have 37 hours to spare for luxury crossings, into a hydrogen based airship is a splendid idea.

The whole thing sounds like a design firm trying to buy some publicity and name recognition. Kind of like "futurists" who generate a crazy list of what the world will be like 100 years from now.

I put this along with the flying cars promised to us by the Jetsons.
