checking jogging strollers at gate
 

Is a jogging stroller allowed to be checked at the gate on a united flight?

I have never seen anyone gate check a jogging stroller, but UA just says strollers must be checked at the gate, so I'm assuming they would take it. Just be advised that UA is not responsible for damage that occurs to strollers that are not packaged in a box and checked at the check-in counter.

We recently flew taking our 'jogging stroller' with us and out of 8 possible times we were only allowed to gate check it once. This actually was a really bad move as it was harder when going through security (everything had to be unpacked and removed) than when without it even though it meant carrying our 7 month year old and ensuring the 2 year old and hand luggage made it in one piece.

None of this was in the US or on United, so is not advice about the carrier more our experience of doing it both ways.

Any foldable stroller is allowed. As long as it's a normal sized jet, they can take it. I've seen massive chariots sitting at the door of United's aircraft!

The only real headache are those strollers with wheels that had to be removed but I think that was more an issue in the 80's when I worked. I don't think too many of those are around anymore.

Bag your stroller if you want but make sure the tag can been seen. Using a bungee cord is a good idea to make sure it stays shut on route. Pay attention to the handles. If you have foam or anything that could get ripped, you may want to either remove the covering or wrap the handles. You can even throw some plastic and tape on them at home and walk through the airport like that (avoiding doing anything extra at the airport).

Mine were once ripped (either UA or LH).

I've seen one, but it was a "Jeep" brand and not a "real" jogging stroller like a BOB.

Like catper33 said, I think it'd be too much of a pain to take everything out and submit to the extra search to be worth it. I'd take a smaller stroller.

Heck, we don't even take our Bugaboo due to risk of airline damage (I know the bag provides insurance, but I don't wanna deal with the hassle of having a broken stroller on a trip or dealing with the claims).

We've checked a double jogger at the gate on our ORD-HNL-ORD trip last year. No problems either direction. Just in case, I used cargo straps (the kind with ratchets) to tie it up as I didn't trust the snaps intended to keep it folded.

This is the newer model of what we have.

On May 10, a few hours after my last post in this thread, on United flying OGG-SFO, a couple gate checked a BOB double stroller. It was HUGE, but they folded it and United personnel took it. It was there when we arrived in SFO.

It can be done.

weve checked our mountain buggy on numerous airlines and i cant imagine united would be any different

I agree. My sister experienced lugging a non-foldable stroller before and they weren't allowed to bring it. Now, she has a Peg Perego Si Lightweight Stroller. It's super lightweight and foldable to boot. It's great for travelers.
