What is a "diaper bag?"

Is a backpack (average size) that holds diapers and milk a "diaper bag?" Or is it a carryon? This is stupid, I know, but as a consequence of the insanity which is airline travel in 2008, I am fearful of getting stuck having to check either the backpack or my rollerboard.

When its my wife at issue, its the most expensive bag that Coach sells in their store.

Are you carrying the bag, a purse and a rollerboard? Or just the 2 items?

taken from the baggage page on delta.com:

What counts as a personal item?

* Purses, briefcases, camera cases, and diaper bags
* Laptop computers (can’t be checked and must be carried on)
* Items of a similar or smaller size to those above

thus it doesnt even count as a carryon...nice!

ps: the title of this thread is a bit misleading!! I thought to myself, even I, an unmarried 22 yo male, think I know what a diaper bag is.

Is this nonspecific question pertaining to travel on DL, or a general airline question? Is it in the right forum?

I'm moving this over to the FT Flying With Children Form (Please see :Special Interest Travel>Travel With Children.

No, it is not right forums from DL but, it is Travel with Children. They will gladly to have your information about diaper bags but, you still allows carryon with diaper bags but, it is only 1 carryon & plus personal items, too.

My husband's experience was that a plain backpack with diapers in it is a carry-on. If you hang little clip-on fuzzy animals all over it, it is a "diaper bag" - you can imagine how this offended his dignity. :D

It strikes me that a relevant point here is the size of a "diaper bag". Although I suppose traditionally a diaper bag has things like Winnie the Pooh or furry bunnies on the outside, in my experience those are rarely used now.

But regardless of style (backpack, tote bag shape, duffel bag shape) or cost (such as csgoalie's wife's bag!), the size of a diaper bag that I see most often does not exceed a run-of-the-mill high schooler's backpack, or medium size tote bag.

So I'd say if whatever you're going to be using as your "diaper bag" meets or is below that size, then you're in good shape to consider that to be your personal item piece as opposed to your carry-on piece.

Awwww...he needs a Man bag from DadGear! ^

For the OP, our "primary" diaper bag is a large TravelPro backpack. When traveling (2 kids) we bring that along with my JJ Cole system bag which looks more like a traditional messenger-style diaper bag. Nobody has ever questioned either bag even though the TravelPro could easily hold adult clothes.
