Double stroller recommendations?
 

Title says it all, mostly. We're going to need something for an infant and a two year old, and are looking for recommendations for double strollers for general urban use (sidewalk-subway-bus, or are we asking too much) which also travel well. We currently have a single Maclaren Triumph which we like a lot, except for its tendency to tip over backward when the child is removed.

Also, if you travel with two young kids and don't use a double stroller, what is your preferred solution?

I skipped the double stroller all together. Granted my kids were 3 years apart, but I never regretted it. I used the sling/baby bjorn for my son for the 1st 6 months almost exclusively. My daughter would ride sometimes but often just for a short bit.

We wound up buying the peg perego with a step on the back and this is awesome. When my son would ride, my daughter would stand on the back. Easy to navigate and pretty lite. Easy to fold, carry and fairly sturdy ( 6 RT from MDT to LAS). When my son turned 2 he rebelled and hated the stroller and I rarely take it with me. And yes, it is a pain sometimes when he wants to run around and I wish I could have strapped him in for his own safety.

So my suggestion is to consider any of the strollers with the step onthe back or a boogie board attachment.

We have the Baby Trend Sit-n-Stand LX and it's worked great for our 3 year old and 10 month old. The front of the stroller can accommodate a child carrier straight from the car, so if your younger one is sleeping you don't need to wake him/her to get them into the stroller. Our 3yo daughter loves that she can either stand on the back or sit on the seat. We've taken it with us to Hawaii and to the Caribbean, and it's done a more than passable job with a decent amount of storage space underneath it. It folds much flatter than I initially expected and can easily be opened/closed with one hand. There's also a bar that "locks" it shut rather than some of the other models that have an internal spring/latch system. We've never had luck with those lasting very long.

One caveat: the wheels are smaller, probably 7"-8", and for that reason it's not the best choice on non-paved or non-grassy areas. It doesn't mind hills, but when we took it to an antique show with lots of gravel walkways I ended up running over to my in-laws house to grab our double jogger.

This stroller worked well with our two girls that are 2 years 10 months apart. Very rugged and one behind the other so you can get in and out of doors easier. Another thought is two umbrella strollers with storage caddies hooked on the back.

I have twins and I absolutely loved my double Maclaren. ^

We have a Phil and teds Explorer Our kids are 15 months apart. It's durable and even lighter than most "plastic" double strollers. If you take off the wheels (very easily and quickly done) it folds flat and you can buy a travelbag with wheels which we've used on several occasions. We bought ours through Joggingstroller.com

Best all-around double (for everything but the bus) = Mountain Buggy Urban Double (it's the same width as a wheelchair 29 inches, so it should work on the subway)

Best in-town or in-and-out-of-the-car double: Maclaren Twin Traveller (I have an older version, so I can't speak to the tippiness issue)

Best double if you need a double sometimes and a single sometimes: Phil and Ted's e3

Best single that can occasionally be a double for a short period of time: Peg Perego P3 or Inglesina Zippy

My boys are 23 months apart. When we travel, we baggage check our e3, and use a Quinny Zapp for the airport (it can be carried on the plane).

If we were going somewhere where both boys would need a reclining seat (Disney, SeaWorld, etc.), we would take the MBUD. When I've travelled alone with both boys, this is the stroller I used (gatechecked).

If you're not going to travel with a stroller, I suggest a sling or wrap.
