Infant in cab / limo
Could any of the US member advise me on the need for a car seat in cab or lime when travelling with an infant. In Europe this would not be required but I am not so sure about US.

Technically required but rarely enforced.

Unless you have a baby under 6 mos., I would put on just the lap belt across the waist, with the shoulder portion behind. It's obviously not as safe as a child's car seat, but it should be a lot better than nothing.

It depends on the state.

I have never seen a New York City taxi with a car seat for a baby or child. Somehow I assume it's not a required law.

My brother drives for Yellow Cab in SF and he tells me the company policy is to require parents to provide a safety seat or to refuse the child passenger. I believe in California the law allows for the DRIVER of a vehicle carrying an unrestrained child to be cited. Mind you, he also says for a big enough tip, you can probably find a driver willing to bend the rules. He won't - he used to work in a hospital emergency room and is a big fan of child safety seats.
