I, too, have many years (and kids)' worth of experience with the Scenera. It will work fine forward facing. You can just not flip the kickstand to increase the recline, and further recline the (plane)seat after takeoff to make it more comfortable.

I am not a doctor, but logic says the hazard you are guarding against in the air is turbulence, so the seat serves to keep the kid from hitting the ceiling. If it were to receive blunt force impact from either the front or the rear (as you would in an automobile), where the direction of the seat matters, well, let's just say you are going to have other issues...

That said, I agree with previous posters that unless you have a large child, a bucket-style seat is probably more comfortable at that age.
