Do I have to pay to check a car seat (not gate check) on JetBlue?
We are traveling on JetBlue with our 4-year-old and I did not want to pay to rent a booster seat in Florida, given I could a) buy one for what it costs to rent and b) get one I know fits her well.
My question is, if I check it at the ticket counter, do I have to pay for it as a bag? I could not find anything clear on Jetblue.com to indicate if I do. I know if I drag it through the airport & gate check it, I don't pay, but I'd rather not do that. Thanks for any insight. |
Please be more specific of what type of seat.
Car seat to me means <4yo/40lb hard/soft shell fully-enclosed seat, with 5-pt harness. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...oq=&aqi=g-e5g5 Booster seat to me means <8yo/8lb bottom/top combo. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&s...=f&oq=&aqi=g10 If car seat or top/bottom booster, I'm guessing (unless it's specifically called out by the carrier) that it'll apply against your luggage allowance. If only the bottom of a booster, I see those all the time ex-DTW to PBI/FLL/MIA, people treat that as one of the kids carryon items and toss it in the overhead (highly suspect it can't be used during flight, anyone aware of an FAA-approved booster-bottom?). |
Better yet, try google:
Google: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&s...ar+seat&aqi=g1 First entry: http://help.jetblue.com/SRVS/CGI-BIN...ase=obj(373795) If checking a safety seat, it will not count as one of your checked bags and there is no fee assessed. Also: Use of booster seats, harness and vest restraints will not be allowed during the movement on surface, takeoff or landing, unless it is an FAA-approved device. I'm presuming that "safety seat" to JetBlue means any seat that a child would use for safety purposes, which could include car seats and booster seats. If true, that's very cool. |

I can't get the link to work. I tried copying and pasting it myself and it didn't work for me either!
I would either pack the booster in a hard suitcase, surrounded by soft items (which wouldn't give you the exemption) or pack the top (if it's a high-backed booster) and bring the bottom on board as a carry-on item. You can't use it on the flight but at least you'd know it would get there and it would fit in the overhead. If you check it, I would put it in a clear bag, so that they can see what it is, and maybe even bubble wrap. Try to get it treated as a "delicate" item. Boosters are easier to buy and replace than car seats. In worse came to worse, and it didn't arrive, one of you could run out and buy one. Still would work out cheaper than renting one! |
