A review of Thrifty

After problems with Avis' $150 cleaning fee discussed elsewhere on this forum, I decided to try Thrifty.
I picked my up in SFO and dropped it off two days later at the same location. When I dropped it off, the check-in agent with her roving hand computer said their computer system was down and they would mail me a receipt. I asked for a handwritten receipt, but was told that was not possible. So I took a picture with my iPhone of the original contract with the agent’s markings, showing it was returned with a full tank of gas.

After two days, no receipt was received. I tried calling Blue Chip customer service twice, but after more than 30 minutes on hold each time gave up. So I sent an email using a form on the Blue Chip site. It said a response would come within 72 hours. It’s now five days and no response.

This morning I received an automated call saying essentially the following: “This is Thrifty. We are calling to let you know that your rental car is severely overdue and it will be reported to law enforcement authorities.” It then gave a phone number for their security department. I quickly called it, was put on hold for ten minutes, and reached an operator in the Philippines. She seemed confused why my call was routed to her, and said she was not Security, but reservations. But she would let Security know that I called. Right! So now must I just wait and see if they can figure it out?

If this is the kind of service Thrifty provides their elite members, I don’t think they are a company I will use again.

Perhaps you should call the SFO airport police at their non-emergency number (650.821.7111) tell them that a criminal posing as a Thrifty employee may have stolen your rental car from their garage?

Explain that, when you returned the car, the person who took it refused to give you a receipt and now the rental car company has called to tell you that they don't have the car.

Good idea

Clever. Might be an action of last resort.
