how are extra hours charged?

I have never rented from Thrifty before and am curious about extra hours. I am scheduled to arrive at LIH at 5:48pm, with departure at 9:30pm. So for the reservation I entered 6:30 as pick up, and 7:30 as drop-off. Now if the flight comes in late or it takes a bit longer for luggage and I wont actually pick up the car until around 7:30, will I still be charged the extra hour that I had reserved it for or only the straight days if the actual rental time does not exceed that?

If you return the car within the "Rental Day" (24 hours) then it should not charge for the additional hour. Before they close your rental agreement out ask them how much the final charge is before they finish closing it. But otherwise the rental hour should be about 1/5 to 1/7 of what the daily rate is, just view your reservation to see the breakdown of the charges.

Thrifty reservations don't (usually) show the hourly rate online. You should be able to call Thrifty (1-800-847-4389) to get it, and of course, it will be on the rental contract.

It's typically 1/3 of the daily rate in my experience, though, not 1/5 or 1/7. Thrifty also did away with its grace period some time ago, although if you're just running a few minutes late, most return agents will give you a bit of a break.

Also, be aware that any additional options (coverage, upgrades, GPS, etc.) or flat-fee taxes charged by the day will be charged as a full additional day for any amount of overtime.

If that will cause a significant additional charge for you, the only real options are some combination of delaying your pick-up and returning early to ensure you don't go over that 24-hour threshold...or begging for mercy from the return agent or manager on duty.
