Of a choice between "what dsquared37 said" and laap leuuat (ลาบเลือด), I went with the former. It was 1986 and I was visiting future in-laws....

Hardly ! It's time to divert the Thai Army divisions from the South and the Cambodian border to take care of these 100 meter - 100 baht scumbags (while they're at it, they might as well eliminate the glad-handing touts for the Indian tailors) (1) http://www.phuketgazette.net/archive...icle10912.html (2) http://www.phuketgazette.net/news/de...h=yes&Id=10917 (3) http://www.phuketgazette.net/news/de...h=yes&Id=10910 (4) http://www.phuketgazette.net/archive...ticle4346.html (5) http://www.phuketgazette.net/archive...ticle2006.html (6) http://www.phuketgazette.net/archive...icle10830.html (7) http://www.phuketgazette.net/archive...icle10859.html - This is my favorite; in a huge surprise, the 'tuk tuk mafia' allowed the US Navy to take buses (rather than tuk tuks) to Patong and did not blockade them. See, they ain't all bad ! wj

I wonder how he will enjoy playing in the 99% humidity come May?

Too many people still operate under the assumption 'it's still cheaper than at home.' So long as that continues there will be people who overcharge.
As for the bullying, it's easy enough to end it but that will take money out of the police/officials' pockets and we all know that will never happen.
Reason #743 that non-touristy areas are better in Thailand.

Thai Hotels to Rise 8-10% Next Year
The Thai Hotel Assoc says they need to meet costs and the market has been flat because of the political turmoil. Arrivals are now up, so prices will be as well. LINK: http://www.cnngo.com/bangkok/visit/t...et-rise-982298

Bad flooding that started upcountry has been affecting the central provinces and those closer to Bangkok. With central Bangkok within the flood gates, it shouldn't be as affected, but travelers should be aware and make plans accordingly.

Is the flooding likely to affect the road to Hua Hin? I remember being on a bus once where the road was pretty flooded (about 2 or three feet ) but it wasn't raining and I'm not sure where the runoff came from.

The current flooding is coming down the Chao Phraya valley. If the flooding is affecting the roads to Hua Hin then sea level has risen 5-10 meters.
