Super Rich money exchange is at 67-69 Rachadamri Rd on street off of Rachadamri, next to Big C, across from Central World Plaza.

When I exchanged cash, for $100 bills, the bid/ask was 33.40/33.52.

Make sure you take your passport!

Hours are Mon. - Sat. 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Superrich is the place.^^

But feel comforted that the rate at the airport is very fair. Change as much as you need for the 1st day or two at the airport without any mentionable consequence.

Maybe I missed it and someone already posted it. But make sure when you exchange to only exchange $ 100.00 bills or higher. There is a significant downside when the bills are 50s or even 20s and 10s.

Actually, the Airport change places will give you the same rate for smaller bills as for $50s and $100s. All of the places in downtown Bangkok will give their best rates only for $50s and $100s.

So, what I usually do is change my smaller bills at the Airport to cover me for the first day.

BTW, there are no bills larger than $100s, at least not any which are still legal tender in the U.S.

Thanks for clearing this up. Never stop learning great things on FT^

SuperRich takes cash only, but the other money changers usually give a higher rate for Travellers Checks and then deduct a fee per TC.

I often would carry only $500 note Amex TCs, getting the best rate and only one TC fee. (Changing 20s or 100s gives the same rate, but the fees for $500 worth of 20s would cost alot vs one $500 note)

How much are the fees? I know in the U.S. I can get AMEX TCs for free.

Use your ATM card. The banks with the purple signs are safe and their ATM's are everywhere. Don't use the ATM's at the 7-11 stores.
Let your bank know you will be using your card in BKK so that they can put the info in their computers. I have never had a fee for using my card.

33 THB (or about 1 USD) per traveler's check, regardless of denomination. Hence seanthepilot's recommendation for using large denominations like $500. The 33 THB fee is made up if two separate fees of 30 and 3.

All banks with whatever-colour sign are safe. In over 10 years and frequent visits using only ATM machines as a cash source, I've never had a single issue with Thai ATMs.

Last time I was back in the states Amex informed me $100 was the highest amount they had. I specifically asked due to the 30 + 3 Baht surcharge on TC's.

I usually use my ATM as I get no fees at all. However some local banks have recently started to charge me 20 Baht per transaction (K, SCB in particular). Still, having an ATM with TC's as backup has served me well in alot of time moving around Asia.

The TMB kiosk on Sukhumvit 11 it's located on the left side as you enter the soi.

Cheers!

I am sorry, I meant to say it's on the right hand side of the soi.

been told to avoid the shady money changing places. Any advice?

There is very little difference from what you get at the airport in Bangkok and what you get in town - for that particular day! The "money changers" in Thailand are banks and mini banks. The rate set daily. The rate you get today at the airport will pretty much match what you get in town. When comparing rates you have to use the same day. The rate will be a little different the next day - either up or down - but not by much.

Stores and hotels will give a lower rate. You can also get money from ATM's and most travelers checks are also cashed pretty easy with a passport for identification. I think Thailand has one of the best methods of changing money in Asia by using real banks. When you leave Thailand there is a money changer at the airport to change the Thai baht into your own currency.

In almost 12 years in and out of Thailand I can't remember any "shady money changing place" because all of the places I change money at have been banks or mini-banks. The rates are clearly posted and pretty well match what is printed in the newspapers.

http://www.bangkokbank.com/Bangkok+Bank/main.htm

I bring cash, travelers checks and a debit card. I do keep a credit card for emergencies. My credit union pays for my debit card atm fees, even when overseas. In Thailand I can use my debit card to withdraw 10,000 baht per day if necessary. The credit union also sells travelers checks without any commission too. I only bring $100 denomination travelers checks with me. There is a 33 baht fee to cash a TC but the exchange rate is also a hair more than ordinary cash. U.S. hundred dollar bills and 50 dollar bills get more in return than smaller denominations like 5's and 10's.

Good luck.

I was hoping there are FTers currently in BKK that may have a pulse on the current rates at SUPERRICH (mentioned above, by Big C Ratchadamri)

I'm looking for both
BUYING AND SELLING rates
for US and CANADIAN dollars

Specifically, I want to buy US Dollars.

If anyone can post or PM me, I'd be greatful.
