Day Trips

Going to be in BKK for a month in December, and was wondering if anybody could recommend some day trips (by bus, tour etc.)

Thanks.

I should have mentioned that I did River Kwai and Tiger Temple last time. But I will look in to Hellfire Pass. Thanks..

Ayuttaya
Bang Pa-In (the summer palace of King Rama V)
Erawan National Park (great waterfall and several caves)
Hellfire Pass/River Kwai Bridge (as mentioned)
Ko Kret
Lopburi (I HATE monkeys)
Rayong

Can be done in a day, although more time is recommended:
Hua Hin
Ko Samet

There are lots of travel agents that can do this, I'm sure, but I always take visiting friends to the Reno Hotel (Soi Kasemsan 1, right at the foot of National Stadium BTS station).

In there is a tour desk. Really good prices (he has the same book/prices as my parents used 5 years ago!). ALL the tours you can think of which can be done in a day.

#1 amongst friends/family is bus up to Ayuthaya via Bang Pa-In, then cruise down the river back to Bangkok (including lunch on the boat)

#2 Taxi (no tour or anything required) out to "Muang Boran" (Ancient City) which is in Samutprakan, about 150-180 baht by taxi. Cycling around this park in the shape of Thailand is great, and a couple of Hollywood movies have been shot there in the hut area around the lake)

#3 I'm too lazy to get up early, but Damnoen Saduak (the better of the 2 floating markets, so I'm told) followed by the crocodile farm on the way back, if you're into that sort of thing.

You've already done the tigers and Kanchanaburi, and I think that's more-or-less it in terms of day trips. If you want an over-nighter though, Hua Hin (as mentioned above) is nice. Nice small seaside town, and a quiet and clean beach. Or likewise, a trip to Koh Chang - you can get the bus from the Eastern Bus Terminal which is at Ekkamai BTS station.

Ayutthaya and Bang Pa In, done in a single day, is highly recommended.

Other ideas...

Hiring a long-tail boat for a day, and navigating the Khlongs can be fun. You can arrange stops for eating and visiting sites (Wat Arun, Royal Barges Museum, etc.)

There are some odd rail journeys available. The train from Wongwian Yai is supposed to be interesting.
