If you are using True just install their app on your phone,

Sorry, I have never done this before. So, if I plan to use my phone for two weeks with mostly data and maybe some voice, I purchase a Prepaid Sim for 49 bhat plus 1-5 GB of data at the same location. If I run out of data I can top it off pretty easily elsewhere.
Assuming the above is correct, how do I know when I am running low? If I purchase 5 GB, it will just stop working once that number is reached?

You can subscribe to a non-stop plan, which caps your speed once you reach your cap, but you still have slow speed data. Or you could re-subscribe to the same/different plan.
All the providers here have apps (iOS/Android), or you can use USSD codes, to determine your balance, expiry, data usage.

NBTC moves to regulate tourist sim cards
THE NATIONAL Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission plans to regulate tourist sim cards for national security purposes, secretary-general Takorn Tantasith said in Phuket yesterday.
"We have a plan to separate tourist sim cards from local sim cards by adding some features that define the location on them. This kind of sim card has already been launched in Malaysia and should help the state in terms of cyber security," Takorn said during a meeting of the Asian Telecommunications Regulatory Council, at which all 10 Asean countries were represented.

btw, those codes didn't work. I just added a data plan at the airport kiosk. She had a list of working codes.
4G non-stop 2.5GB 299Bt auto-renewing
not sure what happens when it's time to renew it, I have less then that (about 249) left on my phone.

Promotions change all the time, as do the subscription codes.
I am pretty sure all of the TrueMove H tags in 7/11 work.
If you don't have enough balance to support the automatic renewal then the plan will be cancelled.

I am pretty sure that model is unlocked and can accept a 3rd party nano SIM.
Normally the phone can automatically configure the necessary APN, you may have to re-start it.
But if you have to manually configure an APN; each provider's settings are different.
You may also have to manually select the APN, enable, then re-start the phone.
You could mess around with a $5 T-Mo SIM to get a feel for what it's like.
You can Google the APN settings for the three major providers here: AIS, DTAC and TrueMove H.
http://help.mobiletopup.com/article-...3g4g-and-wifi/
But there are few tricky settings (APN type: default, supl); I have all three set-up.
And any shop may be able to assist you.
If you have a certain provider in mind just let me know and I'll get the APN details. And if you have problems once here just PM me.
BTW, I just tumbled across these AIS mobile data packages which do represent a significant value. But they are one-time only packages, with hardcaps.
http://www.ais.co.th/one-2-call/en/p...x?type=1&id=44
Scroll down to Internat Max Speed valid for 5 or 7 days. 5 GB/5 days/125 baht.
There is an AIS shop in the Siam BTS station, ticketing mezzanine level, "air-side", which is always empty.

Try using data before you leave the airport. For example, try using maps.google.com. Don't leave the airport until the phone company makes whatever adjustments are needed. I cannot find the paper where I wrote the directions down, but it involved going into settings and choosing DTAC as you internet choice.

Most Android phones can read the APN setting directly off the SIM and configure/enable it on the fly.
If your phone doesn't do that then you'll have to manually configure an APN, save it, enable it and re-start the phone.
You also have to have mobile data enabled.
If you need the APN settings just let me know.
For DTAC specifically
Name: dtac internet
APN: www.dtac.co.th
MCC: 520
MNC: 05
* APN type: default,supl
(these are the only settings you have to make, save this APN, enable it)
* this one usually messes people up, no spaces.
For DTAC there is a secondary APN, which is not selectable, and may be used for MMS's?
Name: dtac MMS
APN: mms
MMSC: http://www.dtac.co.th:8080/
MMS proxy: 10.10.10.10
MMS port 8080
MCC: 520
MNC: 05
APN type: mms
You should have some indication of mobile data upon re-start: 3G, H, H+, 4G, LTE, etc.

I have an inexpensive Android travel phone (Blu 7) so that I can use my iPhone (Verizon) as is when at the hotel or another place with relatively trustable WiFi and still have a phone for calling Uber or to access the Internet when away from the hotel. Originally, I did this to have GPS access, but maps.me works without an Internet connection, so I now use that app frequently. The iPhone was also locked by my employer and attached to a financial company's server, which presented additional issues. It is also much less expensive to do it this way, as turning on the Verizon phone costs $10/day+, versus at most $20 for fifteen days. The Internet connection issue occurred twice with the Blu 7 using DTAC. That phone has never had a US carrier. It is wiped clean (factory settings) after each trip. The issue did not happen with True.

That Blu 7 seems like it might present some unique problems re: dual-SIM and the 3G and LTE support, which seems more US-centric.
AIS, DTAC and TrueMove H all have band 3 (1800 MHz) LTE support, that's what my Nexus 6 uses, and for 3G, DTAC has 850 and 2100, AIS has just 2100 and TrueMove H has 850 and 2100.
In theory DTAC or TrueMove H might be the better options for that particular device?

I used DTAC this time, purchasing a fifteen day plan, and had problems both at the start of my trip and when switching back to that SIM card upon re-entering Thailand on about day eleven of my trip. Previously, I had no issue with TrueMove on arrival nor re-entry, so I'm sticking with TrueMove next time. This time, there was a tour group crowding the TrueMove counter. When I asked, it was explained TrueMove worked best with their home country carrier, so I went to the DTAC desk where there was no wait.
