Long Term Accomodation in Thailand

Looks like I'm in & out of BKK for the next many months (3-7). My thai friends have offered to help me find a room to rent.

I know there's a deposit roughly about the same as the 1st months rent. As far as I've been able to make out... after a certain amount of months, you can get your deposit back, but it's then applied to the water/electric bill?

In Chiang Mai I can get a room for 2500-4000baht/month
I'm thinking 4000 and up for BKK? Or does 8000 get you a much better place?

I'm wondering what advice our FlyerTalkers have?

Price, location, and quality.. maybe a few hints along the way.

as usuall, thank you in advance...
any beach favorites by the week or month as well?

I think you can find a studio for 5k, maybe a 1BR for 8k (exclusive of water, electricity) on a 6 month lease, in the Sukhumvit (soi 4/6) area. Maybe paying down 1 or 2 months rent. Try asking at Saranjai Mansions on Soi 6.

(I'll send you an email with more detail, and also include all the details for the bank account, in a few days.)

Sukhumvit area is Great !!!

In Sukhumvit 4 or 6, Saranjai,Omni or many local apartment can offer a good deal and also very convenient to the sky train. You might find something in Patumwan area opposite the National Stadium can offer a good price. Good luck. :D

Hi Sean

some of my piloit friends get a condo room from the comforts suites near Bkk. they were paying in the neighbourhood of $200 US a month so 8,000 thai BT. I know that is kinda rich for your style.... :D

In the city is better !!!

Comfort Suites is near by the airport. It's great from the airport to the hotel and vice versa. But it's difficult to see people, to feel the city, to eat, to shop, to see movie, to see your friend or to have some drink in the cool area. Being in the cockpit is boring enough, when you're in town, you're better see some light, nice ambience, have a good meal.

Anything less than 10K to rent a studio in the big city like Bangkok consider very cheap for western standard. For local, you might find some apartment for rent ranging from 3K, it's not western standard for all fire and safety concerned.

The choice is yours.!!!!

for those interested...
I ended up renting a new one room apt. near the Phaya Thai and Ratchetewi BTS stations for 5000 baht a month. 10,000 security deposit, with a 6 month minimum. Deposit was refunded to me when I vacated, but I hear this is a rare occurance.

Elevator, telephone (I never used), pay laundry outside, key card entry and security outside at night.... my bill for water and electricity was not much.. maybe 500/600 a month combined.

Not sure where I'll be renting this winter. Bangkok or Chiang Mai... Chiang Mai is winning so far... but we'll let fate decide :-)

For $100 US per month you'll get what you pay for, I urge you to do it and learn since you are actually even pondering it, I know because I've visited my Thai friends who pay that because as employed Thais that at what the average can afford, so if you want to fly airplanes and live like a Thai, go for it, but I'm baffled why you want to pay that amount, anyway, next time you're in Bangkok, get the newspaper and go to the vast rental section, super easy, and for beach front, look at posts on the wall of a coffee shop when you arrive, easy to get a home for $300 a month, and don't worry about not getting a security deposit back, the Thai are the most honest bunch I've met, 95% are Buddist and are uniquely humble, generous and conflict- avoiding. If they do keep it, consider it a gift, your thanks for the hospitality you received as a foreigner in such a beautiful land. What else can you do but smile, relax, and have fun.
