Got a decent deal (CAD$ 122 including breakfast and US$ 25 F&B credit) @ Conrad Bangkok via Visa Infinite Hotel program, just one night before morning flight to Male - hopefully it's good enough and easy taxi to DMK
Comparable prices are SO/Bangkok (CAD$ 148) and Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok (CAD$ 144), should I switch ? |

Peninsula is good but very old style. Great views though.
It depends a bit on which area of town you like to be in - if riverside, Peninsula is definitely not a bad shout. If CBD/Ploenchit I would say Park Hyatt, Waldorf or Conrad (my go to place was always Conrad before moving here). Anantara Siam (next to WA) is also not a bad idea - quite different from the rest of the pack in the sense that it is ‘resort style in the city’ |

Grand Hyatt Erawan has a better location but the rooms are much smaller unless you get upgraded to a suite. But even their suites are cluttered and have too many mirrors to give the impression that it have more space. Never stayed at the So, but the location is out of the way with a Blue MRT station about 250M away. Visited years ago and the spaces look impressive. https://live.staticflickr.com/4643/3...146a3fa6_b.jpg Sunrise at 7 AM Christmas day 2017, from our Terrace Suite 28XX - Conrad Bangkok https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...7b6dd984_b.jpg Grand Hyatt Erawan suite https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...df0c6c39_b.jpg Executive lounge at the Sofitel So |
Stayed at all 3. Would take Conrad over the others. Rooms are big, and upgrades are very good. Quick walk to Ploen Chit BTS station, in the thick of the action.
Grand Hyatt Erawan, don't like the rooms as much, although slightly closer to a BTS station in Chit Lom. Sofitel So is really cool and funky, but it's not a good location. You'd need to take the MRT (and connect to BTS in most cases) or rely on taxis/Grab. |
Thanks everyone, will stick with the Conrad. Hopefully US$ 25 is enough to cover 2 cocktails

That Air Asia flight is in the morning and that is the rush hour so try to get out of there as early as you can.

It's a Sunday 9:15 AM flight, I figure I'm good if I'm in a Grab taxi by 6:45 AM from the Conrad, Google Maps says it's 18-28 minutes on a Sunday morning |

Among the others, any preference? If I'm avoiding the St Regis, then it'll likely be the Peninsula. Any others you think I should consider?

I have stayed at both, StR and the Peninsula and both are outstanding. However, I prefer the Peninsula due to the location and the views. You can earn and burn Bonvoy points or reward nights at the StR.

Another related question for those in the know - Capella or The Siam? When I first started looking at hotels for this trip (pre-Covid!), The Siam was the stand-out option, but Capella seems to get a lot of recognition as being the best hotel in Bangkok. We'd be in the Verndah room if Copella, or Pool Villa at The Siam. Prices are broadly comparable.

Yes it did, until Minor and Mr Heinecke got too fed up with FS not living up to standard among other things, kicked them out and took the hotel ‘in-house’ to improve things

This is the only FS I've ever stayed in and it was one of the best hotel stays I've ever experienced. I also stayed there once after they reflagged and had an equally great experience. Wow, can't imagine how much better it can get if they were not living up to standards.
that is also the case for the new Four Seasons down at the Chao Phraya River, which belongs to the Taechaubol family |

the Four Seasons in Bangkok were always in properties, that did not belong to them. So it always depends on the contracts and the influences of the owner.
