Somewhat banal next to Thai politics but UA has decided to abandon BKK. It appears March 30 2014 will be the final UA flights.

Kinda sucks if you're using UA miles. I think that your trip has to be entirely on UA metal or a RT in J is 160K, not 140. Now, there's no reason to fly them transpac. All their * Alliance partners are way better.

At first, when you posted this, I thought, is it April Fools Day? But after reading the UA thread, sadly this appears to be true. Unbelievable! I flew this route last week - unable to upgrade to C, Y packed to the gills. This is UA's only flight to BKK - one flight a day. I read in the Bangkok Post, tourism in Thailand is booming, despite current political unrest. But this flight also has US business and government people. If UA isn't making money on this route, senior management needs to seek other employment.

From what I understand, since the majority of the trip would be on UA metal, you do not have to pay extra miles for the NRT->BKK segment. So it seems there would be no impact on award redemption amounts. Big impacts for the people that are trying to earn miles, people using upgrades, and all those other perks.

This is, unfortunately, completely incorrect. There is an immense impact.

With the new UA award policies differentiating native vs other *A metal this is yet another foot chopped off (and leaves me wondering how many feet UA thinks I have).

If you want to add non-UA metal flight to an award, and still remain in the UA metal only bracket, that flight MUST be in a class of service lower that the UA award. So, if you're flying UA C to NRT and then hopping on NH to BKK the NH segment must be in Y. If you take NH in C the entire itinerary prices out as a partner award.

If you want to fly that NH C segment on a UA award you MUST have a UA F award otherwise it will price out as a partner C award.

If you want to take TG F then there's no way to get the award on the UA metal price chart. For any partner F award be prepared with a liberal amount of vaseline.....

But for economy my assumption is correct, right?

That is how I understood it reading over the thread

Not sure.

The wiki says, "mixed carriers where UA metal is in premium cabin followed by partner segment in lower class"

which to me implies that , given this is the new UA, that with an Economy award involving a partner, you'd have to walk/swim the final segment, or maybe pack yourself in a bag, or get a job with the partner airline.

But maybe I am being overly cynical - I haven't read the 101-page thread but imagine there is a definitive interpretation somewhere in it.

For Y awards the prices appear to be the same for UA vs partner awards.

Lots of protests and marches scheduled for today, maybe even 13 separate, simultaneous marches...

Huge marches in city today

Re: the late/non-existent rice pledging payments, the BAAC has run out of money, so payments are definitely delayed, but believe they have dipped into the 2014 budget for another 80 billion baht to re-commence payments?

BAAC liquidity 'enough for rice pledging'/

Not sure when the wheels fall off this scheme, but it seems inevitable.

Yeah, I'm getting a bit nervous. It's hard for me to imagine, but Bangkok seems to go from this amazing friendly city to a crazy protest zone every 3 or 4 years lately.

I have a trip planned for late December. Any sense on the ground of the direction this is headed?

I am in bangkok and am now wondering if I should change my plans

As of now flying Bkk-Phuket nov 27
Phuket to Bkk on 30 connecting to my international outbound flight

Am wondering if I should just get on a plane today out of the country.

Well, I doubt they will let them take over the airport again. I think they may stomach some level of protest at government buildings, but they learned from that mistake last time.

I agree. Since that unfortunate incident at the airport in 2008, the protests have tried to steer clear of hurting tourism and commercialism in general, tho with khaosan rd being so close to Democracy Monument, it does get caught up in the action. Hopefully they will avoid going to the malls and stick to government buildings.
