Ages ago they were talking about:

shuttle buses to/from Surasak BTS

erecting an elevated walkway (under the BTS tracks) from Surasak towards the river, maybe with a moving walkway

Maybe some hotels will have electric tuk-tuks, mini-vans and small buses plying the eastern shore, ferrying people from their pier drop-off to Susrasak?

I guess you could check with the hotel once construction begins, but prior to your trip, via email to see what their plans are?

Spider cards face delay

It could take as long as a year to install the common ticketing system on four electric train rail routes in Bangkok, meaning the scheduled launch in March could be delayed by several months, the Mass...

To manage the common ticket system, the MRTA, the BTS and the BEM will jointly set up a subsidiary to supervise the system and the agency by 2019.

10) MRTA Yellow Line (Monorail) Phase 1: 30.4km, 21 stations elevated. Latphrao to Hua Mark. http://www.mrta-yellowline.com/

D) LINES/EXTS TO BE TENDERED in late 2017:
11) Purple Line ext south. Taopoon to WWY then to Ratburna: 23.6 km. 17 stations (12.6km 10 stations underground, 11km 7 stations elevated). Note: Approved for tender by Cabinet on 25 July. If construction starts by mid 2018, then maybe a 2024 opening. https://www.facebook.com/MRTA.PR/vid...75103962706329
12) Orange Line Phase 2, west section: From TCC to Bang Khun Non (Charan Sawitwong rd). 17.5km, 13 stations underground.
13) Blue Line west ext to Phutthamonthon sai 4: 7.8km, 4 stations elevated.
A few updates since August:
C) 9 & 10)
The transfer of land for the Yellow and Pink lines from the MRTA to BSR Joint Venture is going to take longer than expected. Preliminary works are still ongoing, but full construction is not expected to begin until December 2017.

D)
11) Purple Line southern ext: The MRTA has announced that the tender will be delayed from next month until December. That will still mean a mid 2018 construction start if there are no other delays.
12) Orange Line Phase 2 west section: The MRTA has been asked by Cabinet to look at private investment, perhaps a 50:50 PPP funding option. There will be a delay of 4 months while consultants evaluate various options.
13) The Blue line west ext: still expected to go to Cabinet in the next month or 2. Should be tendered by the end of the year assuming no delay.

Purple line pax
Also, as expected Pax have increased on the Purple line by 47% since the Blue line ext to Tao poon opened to around 50k per day, 60k on some days. This is still half of the original pax forecasts for the Purple line, but it will rise rapidly in the next 18 months.

Blue line new train orders:
The Blue line pax have also increased by 20k a day since Tao poon ext opened leading to even worse overcrowding at peak times. Now an ave of 360k per day.

Finally, BEM has placed an order with Siemens for new rolling stock!!! Originally, they were going to order more stock in 2008 but had to defer dur to debt restructuring issues. By 2012, they completely deferred a new order until they won the Blue Line ext operator rights.

BEM has ordered 35 new 3 car sets which will be delivered in 3 stages ;
1) 3 sets in late 2018,
2) 15 sets in early 2019,
3) 17 sets in late 2019.
(Note: BEM should be moving to 4 or 5 cars sets by now as expected pax after the extension are 750k-800k and rising to 1m by 2022)

Seat-stripping gambit draws fans, haters

The MRT Blue Line removed 14 seats from one of its service trains on Monday to accommodate more people, sparking mixed reactions from passengers and observers on social media. The Blue Line is overseen...

It seems like there have been an increasing number of service interruptions on the BTS of late...I ride the skytrain daily, 4X typically, and almost every day it seems like there are problems, mostly small of course (trains stopping between stations, trains stopping at the wrong spot in a station, 12 minutes between trains, then three in succession, pretty much non-stop apology announcements) but still unusual in my ~ 15-ish years experience.

COMMUTERS TRAPPED IN BTS RUSH HOUR BREAKDOWN

BANGKOK — A system failure left hundreds of skytrain passengers stranded on platforms and in carriages for an hour. The trains broke down at about 6:24pm, according to a statement tweeted by BTS management. It said there would be “10 minutes delay” for train rides. However, the system wasn’t back on track until over an hour later at 7:39pm. The system’s operator did not give any reason for the breakdown.

The usual caveat....this is only a summary and all is subject to change. Politics, dysfunction and a lack of coordination abounds in the implementation of mass transit policy and projects. Please note that the list numbers only refer to projects/lines or expected extensions based on future plans - numbers have nothing to do with the MOT/OTP M-MAP 10 line master plan (which is currently being reviewed and updated).

A few points to note;
1) The main progress since my last update in Dec 2016 is that the Orange line construction is well underway and that the MRT Pink line has also started some site construction work. The MRT Yellow line has some preliminary work underway but proper construction is still at least a few months away. The 1.8km ‘toy’ Gold line Auto monorail line has supposedly also started construction but I’m a little skeptical of that.
Currently, some 140kms of new lines are under construction (The current network is around 113kms of what will eventually be some 540kms of metro and suburban lines)
2) In the first half of 2018, we should also see tenders on the Purple Line southern extension (delayed from last year), the MRT Blue line 7.8km west extension, and also the Western section of the Orange line which Cabinet is pushing as a PPP model.
The SRT Dark Red Line ext to Thammasat Uni and SRT Light Red line to Salaya exts are also expected to be tendered this year.
There is also a small chance that one of the 3 BTS exts may be tendered but given the ongoing standoff between the MRTA and BMA on the current 2 extensions, I don’t see another tender going out until next year.
4) 2018 Openings: The BTS Suk line southern ext from Samrong to Kheha SP will open in December.
5) After nearly 20 years the 2 ‘missing’ BTS stations, S4 & N6, are finally being built. Work should begin in 2018.

Those numbers/percentages are usually the "civil works", i.e. the concrete/steel viaducts, piers, station frame; there's a ton of other stuff (track, signalling, electrics, rolling stock, etc.) to catch up on that, once that's done. And the new intercity long-distance rail station (replacing Hua Lumphong) probably needs to be finished a bit too as this is a terminus for the dark red line, during the first "phase (Bang Sue to Rangsit).

If you drive north from the city to say, Don Meuang Airport, you'll see this line, and the stations on the left. Or check out Google Maps, satellite view and you can see the tracks and stations.

As if the BTS didn't have enough problems lately...

BTS apologises for train door opening in transit

Bangkok Mass Transit System Plc (BTSC) apologised Friday after a door of one of its BTS Skytrains opened while the train was in motion between stations on Thursday. Witnesses said, and the Skytrain officials...

No casualties occurred, and the BTS said the door had been fixed.

Yeah, I've watched the progress. Looks to me as though it's going to be a mighty long walk from the station to the DMK checkin counters.
