1) MRT Orange Line: 90.61%
2) MRT Pink Line: 86.54%
3) MRT Yellow Line: 91.24%
It still seems that most of the MRT Yellow line will open in June/July - Latphrao station may not open until a month later. For the MRT Pink line, the first section should still open in July. Limited testing continues on both, this should be expanded to futher sections of both lines in a month or two.

I've already provided an update regarding the SRT Red line extensions. Other tender updates:
1) MRT Orange line west ext (13.4km) - previous tender date of Sept 2020 was cancelled by the MRTA due to Administrative Court challenge by the BTSC consortium after they change the MRTA change the TOR. Still some outstanding matters to resolve in litigation. New tender date of October 2021. Hopefully, contracts then signed in Dec and works to commence early 2022.
2) MRT Purple line south ext (23.6km) - previous tender date of March 2020 delayed to April 2021 due to Covid has been subsequently further delayed to avoid the same problems that occurred with the MRT Orange line. A new bid date of 8 October 2021 with contracts planned to be signed in Jan 2022.
3) MRT Brown line (22.3km) - the design of the line and the N2 Expressway has been completed. The N2 Expressway EXAT tender is planned for Nov/Dec 2021 which means this section of the MRT Brown line will be built first. This is due to the fact that the line is integrated as part of the Expressway structure. For the rest of the line, there are some Cabinet approvals for land expropriation that need to be granted an then the tender will most likely be done in the first half of 2022 - can't estimate a more exact timeframe yet.

1) MRT Purple line south ext (23.6km) - tenders awarded, contracts to be signed later this month
The good news first. The MRTA tenders for 6 contracts were released on schedule, well in early Nov, and 12 bidders submitted bids by the tender deadline of 27 December 2021. Late last week, the MRTA announced the winners of the 6 construction contracts.
Contracts should be signed soon with work scheduled to commence around mid year. There is a 5.5 year contraction deadline in the tender for a scheduled opening in Dec 2027. However, as well know that will probably end up being at least mid 2028.

2) MRT Orange line west ext (13.4km)
Unfortunately, the tender has been delayed due to the ongoing litigation. Also, an ammended EIA had to be approved as there were some design changes. Pracha Songkraw station & Dindeang station were both moved 500m and Yommarat staion was redesigned with extra entrances. The BKK Admin Court has recently dismissed the case against the MRTA and thankfully the BTSC does not appear to be seeking to appeal the case any further. Thus, the MRTA has announced that they will issue a new tender after March with a timeframe to have contracts signed by the end of August.
The original tender sate of late 2017 was delayed until June 2020 as the govt changed the tender to a PPP one - a waste of 2.5 yrs. That tender was subsequently cancelled by the MRTA in Feb 2021 due to the litigation by the BTSC initiated in mid Sept 2020. The tender has a construction timeframe of 3.5 years - had the original tender been issued as first planned in late 2017 we would probably have an open line by now!
3) MRT Brown line (22.3km)
Big delays here. Some major redesign work taking place for this line (and the N2 Expressway project) with the govt now wanting to issue a PPP tender. Redesign is planned to be completed by Sept and the current tentative tender timeframe is mid 2023, a big delay.

The Department of Railways has announced that finally the PPP tenders for the next batch of extensions to the soon to be opened SRT Dark Red and SRT Light Red lines will be out in April. The SRT planned these 2 lines back in 2005.......The Dark Red line will be 87kms when it is finally completed (sometime in 2050 at the current construction rate)
History
It is important to note that that 2 of these extensions (Dark Red to Tham Uni & south ext to Hua lumphong) were approved in 2016. Tenders were scheduled for Sept 2018 but then delayed until later in 2019. Afterwards, in July 2019 the Cabinet referred all extensions for a review with a view to do PPP tenders in early 2020 - much to the annoyance of the SRT.
Light Red eastern ext to Hua Mark
The extension of the SRT Light Red line from Bang Sue to Hua Mark along the current ARL route was always stupid as it duplicates the Cityline service and means building a whole new viaduct and adjacent stations to the ARL stations. However, the subsequent policy change to have the ARL become a part of the Eastern HSR line now means that it might now more practicable but it stills means duplication of services.
Light Red Sriraj/Thonburi Spur line
The short spur line between Taling Chan and Thonburi/Sriraj station (Kanchanaburi services depart from here) is also stupid. The original plan 10-15 years ago was for the MRT Orange line to run along this route and terminate at Taling Chan. However, the SRT objected as they didn't want to 'lose' control of the right of way so this section was swapped from Orange to Light Red. It is still unclear how the SRT plans to operate the Spur line but most likely it will be Taling Chan to Sriraj only. (long term the SRT Light Red line may be extended all the way to Nakhon Pathom and it might be every 3rd service terminates at Sriraj rather than running through to Bang Sue and onwards to Hua Mark)
The priority should be to build following first;
1) 10km ext Rangsit to Thammasat Uni - approved in 2016 and some of which is built north of Rangsit,
2) 11km Bang Sue to Hua Lumphong - approved in 2016 (requires a belowground section past the palace)
3) 15km Taling Chan to Salaya - was also to be tendered in 2018

Unfortunately, the next batch of SRT red lines exts have all been delayed until late 2021 or early 2022 due to the less than optimal current environment for doing PPP tenders. These projects should proceed as govt funded projects to avoid further delay.
Realistically, that means mid 2022 with results that it won't be until post 2025 before we see any of these exts operating
Considering that 2 of the exts were approved in 2016 that's consistent with the prolonged delay of opening the 2 SRT red lines.....

DMMK
I tried out using the walkway from the Red Line station to DMK, coming and going on a short trip to Chiang Mai, traveling light. And no, there is no alternative to that short flight of stairs. No one gave any thought to the needs of passengers with luggage, or those who might have trouble with stairs due to disabilities.

Yawn
My recent visit to Bangkok reminded me of how irritating it was to use the rail transit, and in general how much more I like the buses.
1) Transit-wise, the Rabbit card is still only for the BTS. What a joke. However, I did notice that Rabbit could also be used at some shopping center food establishments.
2) The advertising plastered all over the BTS carriages seems like it would be very unsafe in times of emergency. Plus, you could never tell how full the damn carriage is. And where's the mute button for the advertising inside of the BTS?
3) Where's the Spider card? I thought that was the key to unite BTS/MRT/Airport Rail.
4) Single-use tickets aren't valid for the next day, and they're only valid for specific stations. Ridiculous. In places where I'm familiar with the territory, I've tended to buy a ticket in advance (e.g. for a metro somewhere, when I'm lugging bags to an airport/train station) so as to not have to deal with peak traffic ... at the ticket counters/machines.
5) The major bus complaint is that at the newer bus stops, there are screens telling you when certain buses will be stopping there. However, those screens are only in Thai. Detractors might say, "then go learn Thai." I get that short-term visitors don't tend to use the bus (save for a few lines involving Sukhumvit/Khao San), but if you're going to have the name of the bus stop in English (and at random bus stops, a bilingual bus route guide), why not just have the screen quickly alter between Thai and English.
On the other foot, the good news is that those bus stops with screens tend to have wi-fi; just zip to this website and it's all good.
6) [is there a bus between Ekkamai and Sala Daeng? Doesn't seem that way. I guess the Skytrain is the reason

3) Ah yes, the Spider Card. The Mangmoom shenanigans. That old chestnut.
Other more wise minds will likely chime in on this question.
5) Google Lens is your friend if you can't read Thai, will help with those screens.
As for the rest, all well agreed but its the status quo.
Good post - I tend to not realise that the mass rail transit could be irritating, but its still useful taking into account all of your remarks.

About a week ago, YouTuber Jeroen Maduro cycled the length of the Purple Line extension construction from the Parliament House to Democracy Monument. Pretty interesting and it will change a lot in Banglamphu when it’s up and running, maybe in about 5 years.

Construction progress as at 30 June:

Further delays with the opening of the MRT Pink and MRT Yellow monorail lines
The MRT Yellow line and MRT Pink line were due to open as per I posted above. However, In early Nov it was obvious that there were significant delays with the installing of systems and also with fitting out of stations and exit/entrances installation - stairs and escalators. Accordingly, in mid Dec the BSR announced that both lines would now open later in 2023. Initially, it was said to be June for the Yellow line and August for 1st stage of Pink but more recently.it is now;
Yellow line in December 2023 - the full line
Pink line in early 2024 - Minburi to Govt complex . Full line in mid 2024.
There are the 6th opening dates that have been announced for both lines in the last 20 months. However, this time they have at least allowed some extra time to complete all installation and 2-3 months of full line testing which is already occuring to some extent.
ARL ext from Phaya Thai to DMK
For the Airport Link the CP consortium did finally take over operations in Sept last year after missing 3 payment deadlines. However, they have delayed starting works on the estension to DMK and the Eastern HSR line (AKA 3 Airport line) as the consortium is seeking to renegotiate the terms of the contract and concession in a post Covid context. When they originally signed the contract in Oct 2019 they stated that the line would be operational by 2024.
Assuming that construction does begin mid 2023 to Q3 2023, then this line will not be completed until late 2028 and more likely well into 2029.
Meanwhile, NE HSR line to Korat progresses slowly
The 250km long Stage 1 of the NE HSR line to Korat is only 15% built as of end of 2022. The govt is stating that this line will open in mid to late 2026, but 2027 is more realistic. Next year the govt plans to start construction of the 356km long Stage 2 ext to Nong Khai. This is planned to be completed by 2029/30 and will link with the Laos fast rail line which runs to China once that is extended 20kms south to the Mekong from Vietiane station and a new bridge (HSR & Thai NG tracks) is built 30m east of the current Friendship bridge.
There will be a lot of progress on this line in the next 18-24 months so we'll have a better idea of an opening date in early 2025.

SRT Red line extensions update:
As expected, these have all been delayed. However, the easiest 2 extensions are planned to be tendered in the next 6 months. If that process goes smoothly work should start later in 2023.
1) Dec 2022 SRT Dark Red line northern extension, Rangsit to Thammasat Uni - 8.84kms. This can literally be built in less than 2 years as it is mostly at grade.
3) Jan 2023 SRT Light Red line western ext from Taling Chan to Salaya - 14.8km and mostly all at grade. Includes the construction of 2 new stations on either side of the river on the current section to Taling Chan.
