offline maps?

Google maps has an offline option, but Thailand isnt mentioned there.

any other apps/workaround to get Thailand maps (at least the big cities) as offline maps, namely, maps I can browse w/o a 3g/wifi connection?

Im using an android 2.3 phone

TIA

If you have a wp8 phone, you can use Here(Nokia) maps off-line.
Used them in Hong Kong and at home and they are pretty accurate.

Mobile data is relatively inexpensive here, Google Maps works fine on 2G. Streetview is handy, as is Google Maps Directions which incorporates public transportation.

Google Maps caching (of off-line map squares) and Google Turn-by-turn Navigation works but requires hacking.

If you have a Garmin nuvi GPS system it is pretty easy to find and load a map for Thailand.

Search playstore for OSMand. It uses OpenStreetMap (OSM) data.

I was in some areas off the beaten roads in Thailand, and it did better than the google live maps (I had 3G on my phone)

what is a good free Android GPS that is in English + Thai for Thailand ?
that downloads to my smart phone over WiFi and does not need to be online to use

Thai is so I can show the Taxi driver :)

or if its not free that will take my Thai ATM card ?

so I can show the Taxi driver
I wouldn't bother if this is your only application.

You will simply confuse the driver.

All you really need is an address.

I haven't stayed up to date on the off-line options, most here just use GMaps on-line, but these have been mentioned in the past:

That first link - Nostra Maps - is perhaps the most popular Thai map app. I use it myself occasionally but it is definitely not offline.

Two map apps I use most often during travel (not Thailand specific) are Maps With Me and Maplets.

Both are for iPhone and Android, GPS enabled, works everywhere, completely offline. Maps with Me is a traditional street map (open street map data source). Maplets is for everything else from hiking trails, shopping malls, terminals, etc.

No navigation though if you need that.
