I have seen the DTAC, AIS and TrueMove shops open as late as midnight.

If they are closed when you clear Customs be aware that you can purchase a SIM at any convenience store (7/11, FamilyMart, et al.), of which there are several million here, and they are open 7/24/365.

Thanks.
A couple of us are flying in different dates and arriving late. Just thought it would be handy/nice just getting the phones set up right when we land to let the others know we've arrived. But yep, plan B is 7Eleven.

Keep an eye out going through immigration or just after customs. There's often free SIMS being given out on promotion.

Those are TrueMove (interSIM), and they are OK. No 3G with those. Maybe better to spring for a paid SIM from AIS/One-2-Call, DTAC/HAppy or TrueMove H, which may set you back all of 50 - 100 baht.

Note that TrueMove's concession is scheduled to end Sep. 15, 2013.

there is a 7-11 in the airport too

I always stop for a cold pepsi when I get there and break a 1000 baht bill
