Grand Mercure Bangkok Park Avenue - Fire

Today, March 8 - from AP

A fire has burned part of a high-rise hotel in Bangkok's main tourist district.

Firefighters rushed to the Grand Mercure Bangkok Park Avenue shortly before 10 p.m. Thursday and appeared to get the blaze under control. Smoke was visible outside, but the fire did not appear to be burning the building exterior.

An Associated Press photographer saw people still stranded on upper floors an hour later.

It was not immediately known if there were any casualties or what caused the blaze.

The mid-range hotel has has 221 rooms and is located off Sukhumvit Road, a tourist and residential district popular with foreigners

Sukhumvit Road near Asoke was crazy as I was returning home last night ~ 9:45 PM. At least twenty emergency vehicles, lights and sirens, trying to make their way through traffic, outbound. I was in-bound at the time, and had no idea what was going on. I have never seen so many emergency vehicles before here.

I think one foreigner died, while some 20 others (including 17 foreigners) were injured. The property is now called the Grand Park Avenue Hotel (no longer a Mercure property I guess), on Sukhumvit Soi 22.

Wow 2 serious high rise fires in one week in the same area. The other was an office building and was very bad (but I think no one was hurt)

No sprinklers

Amazing that sprinklers weren't required until 1992!

No fire doors.
No fire exit in one wing.
No smoke alarm.
No fire alarm.

The only warning guests had was when they smelled smoke!

Thailand can be dangerous - sometimes.

A tourist was electrocuted in a swimmingpool on Phuket.
