Cheap Flight to BKK?

Hi,
Trying to meet my friend in Bangkok around Dec 15th-Jan1st or so, leaving from Ft. Lauderdale or Miami.

Have some flex, and looking for a way to spend much less than the $1500 price and up.

I have a credit on delta for $782 or so, and wondered if there are any deals that I am missing.

Checked kayak.com, all the standards, like travelocity, orbitz.com, and even student sites, even though I am really out of the student age. I'm in a online course and may be able to stretch it.

I could even fly into another country and go from there.

Anyone have any ways to get a much better deal than the $1500 price that I see?

You're talking about traveling to Thailand at the peak of its high (i.e., busiest & most expensive) season. Any deals that may have been available for the Christmas/New Year period were probably snapped up a long time ago.

Hi Rampo,

Sorry if this question sounds stupid, I am new to FT. But I was wondering if you knew when the cheapest time to go to Thailand was? I am not too particular about when I go, I would just like it cheaper. I am based in the Seattle.

you can try in may. I booked that period for 10 days two months ago and it costed 500 euros the ticket with emirates and 450 euros the hotel 4* suite for 9 nights.

In my experience, give or take a month or two, March-May and late August-November have been the times when I've found the better airfares, although in the last year or so really good airfares have been few and far between. March through May is the hot hot season but Thai New Year (Songkran) which revolves around April 13 can be a lot of fun if you don't mind being soaked to the skin occasionally. (Water throwing is part of the fun.) The temperatures in October and November are more comfortable but may overlap a bit with the rain season.

if you plan on using your Delta credit then you are pretty well stuck looking for a Delta flight or Delta codeshare....
Keep looking at the Mileage Run Deals section,

there was a cheap $800 flight to Vietnam
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/milea...0-4-3-cpm.html

and there are "Southwest" type airlines flights to get you to Bangkok.

But its still going to be hard / close to impossible to get this Christmas - New Years weeks

Thanks manos That sounds like a pretty good deal. I actually hadn't even started thinking about accommodations yet, but that sounds like a pretty good deal! I will have to look into that.

Rampo,

Thanks for the time frames. I am going to start looking into it. I will probably be looking more into the August-November time frames. But the Songkran festival sounds like quite a bit of fun. I will just have to figure out how to get the vacation time to go. hahaha

Thanks again for your help.

If flying regionally from Asia to Bangkok, summer incl August can be a good deal. But TransPac, avoid August, very busy season with students and families going back and forth in both directions, and prices are high. Get into September and you should see better fares, October also usually good and sometimes the first part of November. March-May also not bad (except for Songkran mid-April period).

It doesn't get much worse for fares than mid-December to early January.

You may find that taking a domestic USA positioning flight to a major gateway city and then flying from there works better. A NYC-based friend swears that the best way to get to Asia is on Emirates via Dubai, she seems to routinely get $800 round-trips to East/SE Asia except in the Christmas season. If you can find something on Delta to anywhere in SE Asia (may have to go via NRT connection) where that credit would be honored, it would be a good way to use it.
