Using iPhone in Thailand

Has anybody used their iPhone in Thailand? What's the 3G coverage like? What about Boingo? Any recommendations for Bangkok- or Thailand-oriented iPhone apps? Thanks!

Iphone, Iphone 3G and Iphone 3GS all work in Thailand, however, there is no 3G coverage because the three operators and the government are arguing over the 3G spectrum licensing terms.

Everything is in place for 3G but they have wasted 2 years+ so far with red tape and no progress.

You can buy a local prepaid SIM card (2G) from 7-11.

AIS and DTAC have best coverage, True is not good outside the cities. You can get 1 month "unlimited" GPRS/Edge connectivity for 999 Baht on prepaid.

BKK Transit is a free ap that has good maps of BTS, MRT, and Chao Phraya Boats. It also includes nearby attrations (with pictures and a little info blurb) for many stops. ^

3G in BKK

Mrs Doakes just got a new iPhone last week. She was in Central World (probably near Siam Square) and did have 3G coverage...also free WiFi.

I think that she has True. I know that her other phone is DTAC and I know the new phone doesn't have the same carrier.

The lack of 3G outside the city is true, but at least for her there was 3G inside the limits. She loves it, but boy was it expensive in Thailand!!

I have Lonely Planet Bangkok guide book, True ThaiGuide, EnThai dictionary, BKK Transit as mentioned above, and TomTom Thailand navigation program.

I'm not sure if it's worth to get one-2-call SIM over true SIM.
And true's unlimited GRPS/EDGE plan is only THB599 per month, and 799 with wifi.
Last time I was in Bangkok, True wifi was everywhere, so it might be worth it to check out.

DTAC was testing out 3G in the Rama 1 area (Siam Square, MBK, etc) for a while so maybe that is still up and running? That might explain the 3G coverage at CentralWorld.

If their website is still up to date, true has 3G coverage around these areas:
Siam Paragon, Emporium, Central World, Ma Boonkrong, Siam Center, Siam Discovery, Kesorn Plaza, Central Silom

I use True and have great 3G coverage around the city. I use the 799B service as the wifi is everywhere. I tried AIS but they didn't have a bundled solution like True and didn't have 3G in the city although they are trialling it in certain places.

In Thailand, I have an iPhone 3GS and use it with True's Baht 599 per month unlimited data package....

however recently connecting my laptop to the internet using the phone connection has been super slow...anyone else experiencing this??

does DTAC (with Blackberries) have faster internet connections?
