Bangkok Post: THAI may replace up to 20 routes

From the Bangkok Post, March 12:

National carrier may replace 20 money-losing routes: BKK-Narita-LA costs THAI B700m a year

Thai Airways International Plc (THAI) is overhauling its international flight schedule by suspending traditional money-losing flights including the Bangkok-Los Angeles route via Narita and introducing more promising destinations. Some 20 loss-making routes could be cut as services to Moscow, Milan and Bangalore are due to start next month......

Full story (requires free signup for username) at http://www.bangkokpost.com/Business/12Mar2004_biz50.php

Summary below:

Flights suspended/terminated:
Zurich
Geneva
Bangkok-Narita-Los Angeles suspended at the end of this month.
Daytime flights to Paris next month

Increased/New flights:
Bangkok-Osaka-Los Angeles from three to four a week.
Tokyo
London
Munich
New York, Chicago or San Francisco (non-stop with the new A340-500 in March or April 2005)
Amsterdam, Oslo or Vienna (with A340-600 in June or July 2005)

The airline is also looking at adding flights to South and Central America with non-stop services to Rio de Janeiro, Mexico City or Sao Paolo next year.

Thanks for the link -- but is it just me, or is the schedule for the new flights messed up? I presume the first row's KIX-LAX 1615-1040 should be 1615-1040* next day, and the second row should be LAX-KIX-BKK with KIX-BKK 1900-2230 on the same day?

A shame the new flight won't be flown on Mondays, I've got a booking for the morning KIX-BKK flight on Mon Apr 5 and would've preferred to fly out in the evening...

Flying eastbound from BKK to LAX you arrive the same day. Flying westbound from the USA you arrive a day later due to crossing the international dateline.

Of COURSE it's a money losing route. Thai places its archaic 744s on this long-haul route with seats in business and first that no one paying for a ticket would sit in. What do they expect? It's a self-fulling prophecy.

Gee...do I fly in a modern business class seat on another carrier or sit in a "business" class seat on Thai that compares with economy plus on United?

Give me a decent product and I'll fly it. Thai should be embarassed by the product they presently offer on this route.

Look at the link -- it doesn't make sense that way either. The claimed schedule is:

TG774 BKK-KIX-LAX 0735-1505/1615-1040
TG775 LAX-KIX-LAX 1340-1750/1900-2230+1

Note the "LAX-KIX-LAX" and that the second KIX-LAX is +1. Maybe it's supposed to be like this?

TG774 BKK-KIX-LAX 0735-1505/1615-1040
TG775 LAX-KIX-BKK 1340-1750+1/1900-2230

In addition to SFO, ORD, and JFK, Thai is also considering adding service to Miami:

Half a year later there's still no sign of Thai ever starting service to Moscow. Anyone heard anything about it recently?

They simply don't have enough aircrafts. The current usage is pretty high already. Things will get better when A340-500 and A340-600 are delivered early next year.

There is talk of a possible TG flight to MAN via another European City. Could it be they're looking at via Moscow as well as CX

I know MAN have been trying to get TG in for the last couple of years.

Flight was previously 16:00 - 09:05. New announcement is 16:15 - 10:40!!

How does a 15 minute delayed departure add 80 minutes to the flight time???

Gotta agree they are missing the point on the "money losing" routes. It's the plane stupid.

The latest Sawasdee magazine has this added to the routemap with the comment "Starting October 2005" in parentheses below. JNB flights are similarly scheduled to start in December.
