Is the A346 really that magnificent in F?

I've heard some rave reviews on the A340-600 in F - is it really that great? Have many people travelled on it? Will be on it from BKK to ZRH in a couple of weeks, and it seems to be the aircraft on that route.

Thanks for any input/insight.

Myself and my wife travelled in F on a TG A346 BKK-AKL earlier this month. Two things stick in our minds about the inflight experience.

The one thing that really made a positive impression on us over all of the other carriers that we flew on that trip (LH F, 2xSQ F & NZ C) was the ablility for two people to dine facing one another comfortably just like in a restaurant. NZ C also provides a guest seat but it was uncomfortablely small even for my wife. If you are travelling alone though I suppose this is of no benefit to you.

On the downside, we found the service to be a little disappointing. Despite being told at check-in that there were plenty of spare seats in the F cabin by the time we departed 7 out of 8 were occupied. The FA was a more mature lady and I am unsure whether she had even worked in the A346 F cabin before. She was helpful but did not know how to open the small storage compartment that contained the amenity kit (I had to show her - and it was my first time aboard!) and we were not once addressed by our names. To be honest she was overworked as she perhaps performed 80% of the F service by herself with a little help occassionally for two male FAs.

It was the TG ground service though that really impressed us. Limo from the hotel, escort through security to lounge, then another escort to plane. ^ ^ ^. Even better than SQ at SIN and LH at FRA (even with their F terminal).

I think they don't do that anymore. I wasn't addressed by name, either. When I was on my flight to AKL last month.

Or they do it, still? Anyone knows?

Being called by name is a nice touch but it shouldn't be what makes or breaks F service. I personally couldn't care. I flew it from NRT-BKK over the holidays and I loved the spaciousness of the cabin and the seats were utterly comfortable. I loved the touch screen, the moveable otterman, the oversized pillows, a full PJ set, the Bulgari amenity kit and the two FA's who serviced our cabin who were exceptionally polite, professional and attentive.

My FA didn't understand one of the control buttons in my seat either but I thought it fun to discover it together. It was a brand new aircraft. My glass stayed full and they were always quick with a smile.

I prefer the new 747 F over 346 F - mainly the more exclusive feeling in the 747 F cabin. In the 364, I found that the light coming from the galley (despite the curtain) to be annoying on occasions. The crew (Dec 05) were not that very familiar with 346 equipment, whereas the 747 crew had a very slick operation. I'm sure that these very little things will all improve over time.

Interestingly, the 346 crew considered the 747 to be a much better workplace, especially for premium cabin, and greatly preferred the 747 galley layout (which is much bigger). It may also have had just as much to do with the change out of the 'comfort zone' from operating in the 747.

That said, I'm very much looking forward to my BKK-AKL-BKK 346 F flight in June....

I didn't know TG has Bulgari amenity kit now - is it like the SQ ones in F? Does TG also have Bulgari toiletries (cologne) in their F bathrooms as well then?

In F, the amenity kit is either Bulgary or Givenchy. They also provide Bulgary lotion and cologne in F bathrooms.

Oops. Yes, Givenchy is for Royal Silk. So in F it's either Bulgari or Hermes and usually they will give out different brand for each direction of flight.
