Arriaval tax
Is there a new arrival tax paid at Customs and Immigration when you enter BKK? I had heard one was going to be established sometime this year. If so is it included tax paid by your airline ticked or is it a cash tax upon arrival? It is paid in cash, what currency? thanks

there are currently no news about that!
it was never planned as a cash tax. The airlines would have been liable to pay for passengers and include it in the ticket price.
But of course implementation is very difficult as Thais, PR etc. do not have to pay...so very diffcult for the airlines to identify and differentiate in ticket prices....
no surprise that currently nobody is talking anymore about this....it remains to be seen whether the new government and the new tourism minister will revive plans or not....

it would significantly slow down immigration process and that's what authorities want to avoid...

Didn't they have something like this decades ago in Don Muang, lining up to pay the 500 or 750 (?) baht departure tax at a little vending machine?
Adding a departure tax that way would be a big step backwards compared to just including it in the ticket price like almost everywhere else does now.

Ah yes, fun times. I do recall colleagues that would on about booking a long connection at BKK (23 hours for example) after the tax was integrated, then that tax was not paid on such long connections. One could then head into the city for a decent portion of the day, and on the departure from BKK avoid paying the tax, especially if holding the onwards Boarding Pass. Wasnt personally too bothered, and would pay if asked for the USD20.

in particular after Covid many Western airports struggled getting back to full capacity while BKK managed that better.... and BKK was literally a ghost airport during many months (I have flown in and out during that period), while the European destinations i have flown to were still relatively busy

Sorry that it came across like that.
I didn't mean to say that BKK is particularly bad compared to the rest of the world. I've waited much, much longer in my so called developed home airport ZRH than in BKK, and I also agree that BKK got back to it's feet much better than others.
My point was just the one we agree on: No additional hurdles anywhere, please.
