Maximum Number of Segments / Connections on a Star Alliance Award

Maybe 3 Segments In Each Direction
On a trip to Asia from the US I booked this week, I was only allowed 3 segments in each direction for a total of six segments round trip.
I have to purchase a separate ticket to the Star Alliance US hub city for my trans Pacific flight to Asia.
